ADvice on places to live in Tauranga

I'm moving down to Tauranga at the end of October and wanted to get an idea of the best/worst places to live. Also are there holes in the ADSL coverage in Tauranga?

Incase anyone knows of someone with a rental available:
I'll be setting up a lab in the Mount and so want to be resonably close by.
Don't like apartment/conjoined houses etc.
Needs to be in quiet area.
Looking at spending around $320p/w in rent.
There's only two of us, no kids, maybe a cat.

I'm not sure setting up a p lap is a great idea.

The worst suburb would probably be Merivale/Parkvale....visible gang presence there
Other bad suburbs are Gate pa/Greerton and Arataki (near Bayfair).

AFAIK There arnt many holes in the adsl grid. Even people out of the city dont have problems getting it.

I grew up in Tauranga and i can tell you now that there will be very few quiet places over at there unless you get right down Papamoa way and not anywhere near the main road.

I lived in Matua in Tauranga and loved it as a kid, it's probably a bit out of your way if you want to be at the mount each day though. Definately has some quiet little streets though. No idea about rent costs however sorry.

Awesome, was looking at Gate Pa and Greerton as there where a few good looking places there, will exclude them now.

I'm not from Auckland so close extends to around a 15min drive

Papamoa/Welcome Bay looks like the places to be at the moment. Matua doesn't look all that far away. The labs gonna be near the petroleum warf so pretty close to the bridge.

Anyone have any ideas on prices? Any other recommended areas?

Welcome bay has the worst traffic. Basically one road in/out.
As for travel times, it takes a good 20 minutes to get across town. Mount->Matua is about 15 minutes in lite traffic.

Ha! In Auckland it usually takes that long to get out of your street, let alone to the next suburb...

as dairyboy said Welcome Bay is pretty bad for traffic due to the road layout, but is still a nice place, and once off the main road and a few streets back things tend to be fairly quiet. A very nice view is get high enough up as well

/me locks his doors.

I've been living there for a few months now, but I'm not all that well schooled on the suburbs/areas yet. I tend to only leave the Mount area to go to the pubs on the strip, and to Wendy's. Everything else is I need is pretty close to home.

If you're so keen to live in a hole why not skip Tauranga & just move straight to South Auckland, I'm sure you'll be robbed/stabbed/raped slightly more often.

My sister and her partner both work in Tauranga and live in Kati Kati. It's nice and quiet and they seem to be doing it fairly well. Not sure if it'd be a younger man's game though, they're doing the family thing..
