I posted something like this in the old forums but since we lost those Ill post this again.

Ive been trying to look for a way of laning wif my cable modem, sharing the connection bewteen 2 computers. Ive tried the 2network cards in the one main computer trick to no sucess, Ive tried doing over a hub but only getting a IP clash, I really cant think of anyother way of it doing without forking out for a $400 router :\

Ive tried ringing Telstra and Paradise but they just wont help you with this for some reason - They just tell you its either not possible or that "We'd rather keep that information to ourselves, since it could cause problems"

SURFboard Cable Modem SB4100
WinXP Pro

Any suggestions are much welcome

Ah - so it's not a router after all, just a modem - but one that's external and with an RJ-45 connector :(. Doh!

What IP's did you give the machines when you put them on the hub?

Viper gave us some IPs to use just so we could LAN (but not share the connection) that worked fine, but trying to get the actually connection shared did not.

Yeah Jackal - Only one RJ45 port at the back and one USB Net port (ive tried using the USB Net in combination with the RJ45 but still a IP clash)

and varkk Im pretty sure that wont work because it sounds like that tutrioal is for cable modems wif more than one RJ45 port - and Ive been told LANing cable is very different from ADSL and DSL..

the article that varkk posted should explain everything you need to do... it was written way back when cable was first on the scene and the hardware hasn't really changed since. if you still can't get it working email the author of that article, i'm sure he can probably offer some advice.

it's important you read the whole article thoroughly as it contains a wealth of information, but this is a good place to start:

Yeah, I read a bit of the article, and it goes on about a lot of different cable/DSL setups etc, but it does in one part address what sounds to be your problem which is that you have to be careful to keep the networks separate, or else you get problmes with IP clashes etc

Even though Im running WinXP - should be alright for me to take the Win2000 tutrioal?
