View Full Version : OC'ing unlocked XP1600+

Ok, I'm gonna unlock my XP1600+ soon so I would like to know what's the best combination to overclock this baby?

Would it be something like a lower multiplier such as 8x and go for a high as fsb (180mhz or something)? Or go for something like 12x multi and a little higher fsb (145mhz or something)?

What you ppl reckon? I want extreme performance over clock speed (vid, ram etc.) I'd say low multi and high fsb will achieve this?

10x 166 would be decent.

or 8 x 200 ;)

Antallica
08-07-2002, 01:17 PM
Yeah I thinking 8x200 as well (400mhz sys bus OH YEAH!!! :D) just hope my board will take it :D

I wanna try hit at least 1.8Ghz or even higher (watercooling will probably be required :()

Low multiplier and high FSB is the way to go. Although you have to watch out for all sorts of things, PCI slots, AGP slot, ram stick quality ... also take care on what cooling you do have now, for example, don't overclock heaps on a stock air cooling heatsink but you know that already.

Plus things like voltage changes and so on.

Don't aim to high yet, benchmark each 1 Mhz FSB you do have so you know it is stable, otherwise you could end up with a very large paper weight on your hands.

You know all this ... I hope.

Yep, I have been here long enough to know the dangers of this.... I think my Tt V7+ will be sufficiant for now.

This will take a fair bit of my time but I'll get there. I'll get my old P166 going as a backup pc in case I gotta use the net.

1st I gotta find out if this glue/conductive pencil trick is gonna work. Then I'll give it a go myself.

High multiplier.

Your board ( DRV2 ) will be throwing some unholy PCI speeds around if you don't. Also, I'm not sure how high that mobo could take the fsb. My KR7A is sweet at 180, and would be higher if I had better RAM - but a DRV2? I don't think so, unfortunately....

well, it also depends on ur stepping of ur Xp. What is it? Coz i know the new AROIA stepping xp1600+ will do 1800 - 1900mhz on air. Also, when u unlock, u dont have to use superglue, u can just colour and fill in the pits with a crayon :) Another way (im not sure if it works) is to place a piece of masking tape over the top, and poke holes through the tape where the contacts are. Then u draw over the top of the tape with ur conductive ink. This way u dont loose ur warranty coz u can just peel it off :)

My stepping is AGNGA - probably the worst I take it? hehe :p

1) GO HERE:
http://www.overclockers.com/

2) Click on 'CPU Database'

3) Select 'Palomino 1600 XP' from the AMD chips drop down box

4) Click on 'Get the goods'.

Ahh yes, that's KJ. I had a look there once before checking clock speeds on DRV2's, I'll have a look for my stepping vs. clock speed this time (hopefully find a drv2 in there somewhere).

Oh I see 4 AGNGA's at 1.8Ghz or over. Non soltek boards :(

Tape works :D poking holes is a hassle though just cut the tape small enuff so that the points are exposed but the trenches are covered ;)

Damn this tape thing seems so easy.... I might buy a conductive pencil and just use tape. Can do it like tomorrow or whatever :D

Has anyone actually done this?

The OC.com database is laced with false entries. I would not use it as a tool because stepping information isnt a requirement.

ANY database will be laced with false entries. NO database holder is going to go around to people's houses and check with an oscilliscope now, is he?

So BELIEVE the results - just with a pinch of salt. Cos regardless of errors, that's about the best you're going to get.... :(

Actually you will lose your warranty because you first have to remove the 'Warranty Void if removed' sticker.

Antallica: I personally used the Superglue method, it's not that difficult, just make sure you have selotape in all the right places when you fill the trench. ie: covering the bridge contacts.

Don't use a Crayon. For the love of all things decent and pure, please don't use a crayon. Hmm, the crayon method - straight from Volodkovich's Kindergarten Overclockers Club. :p

Seriously, just say no to the temptations of the crayon - it's just too soft, especially if you plan on using a conductive pen. Superglue is the best, it sets [H]ard. :D

Any suggestions on what glue?

Ok so I'll just cover up the contacts with tape, glue up the threnches, scrape off excess glue, take off tape and use the pen to connect each contact with it's 'over the trench' buddy.

Is a voltmeter nessesary?

I just used 'Bostik Super Glue' in a 3ml tube - what you're after is a superglue that dries clear - some types dry and turn a misty white colour and that would be a real pain in the arse.
Also, you want a Super Glue that is very thin in consistency - so none of that Selleys Araldite Epoxy crap.

Ok so I'll just cover up the contacts with tape, glue up the threnches, scrape off excess glue, take off tape and use the pen to connect each contact with it's 'over the trench' buddy.

You won't have to use much glue at all - no scraping should be necessary if you use just enough glue to fill the trench and the selotape is positioned correctly. I left the glue to dry overnight - just to make sure it was set [H]ard.

Is a voltmeter nessesary?

No. A Multimeter is not necessary, although I did have one. I found that my eyes were all I needed really.

I'll have a look around at the hardware stores for the glue... as for the pen I might buy it online (other option is DSE :()

Cheers :D

Human, forgive me, but you are an idiot.

I use the Crayon/Wax method for the simple reason its easily removed, as opposed to the superglue method which is permanent and messy.

You should be able to get the glue @ Whitcoulls, Supermarkets etc... I bought mine at a Post Shop. :p

The CurcuitWorks Conductive Pen is $33.50 from: www.dse.co.nz - I imagine www.jaycar.co.nz would have something similar.

Jaycar has a silver laquer for $10 but it's in Auckland and if you get near the end of the tube as I did there's too much liquid compared with the silver stuff so it's too runny :(

Stupid question but how exactly does the conductive pen work? Is it just like a pen or do you do something else with it?

Damn no circuit-works pen in my DSE branch, have to order it in. Last time I did that my hsf took a week to come :(

I.R
08-07-2002, 04:58 PM
It has a nib and when you push it down the conductive stuff flows..... last unlock I did however I pushed the nib in with a needle and then used the needle to paint the connections ;)

Excellent, I'll go in and order a C-Works pen tomorrow and check out whitcoulls while I'm at it :D

Thanks for the help guys :)

Done this a few times, and it's not as easy as painting with conductive pen, IT"S TRICKY.

Anyway super glue is not the best, and contrary to some peoples belief, you can get a super glue remover to remove all traces. Bravo you just look like an idiot now. I only expect croyon will soften, and melt in may cases (excuse the pun) and the unlocking process would have to be completed again.

My recomendation is nail polish, any colour. It's cheap, found in almost any womens handbag (even some of you guys pockets) and is easily removed with nail polish remover. Even comes with a little application brush. Quick drying unlike super glue as well. Apply 2 coats just to make sure, and it takes less than 10 minutes.

Good for you, I never said it wouldn't work, just have my doubts. We are not into flaming in this forum, but you are just asking for it. What a pitty you will probably get banned before we all lose our patientence with you and shoot you down. Wish I was a mod so I could kick you out for a week, but you will get what's coming to you.

I'm now going to go out of my way to see if you've had anything (anything at all) constructive to add to these forums.

Oooooooh what shade of nail polish are you going for :p

one more thing...... normal cellotape leaves some of its glue behind and at certain angles (If you have a lamp, which you should) it can look like conductive paint........ electrical tape IMHO is crap because it isn't sticky enuff....... in the end I went g[H]etto free hand ;)

Well I have two shades of red... #53 (darker red and #52 (lighter red) I think I'll go for the #53 :D. Damn this stuff is like 8 years old, still reeks as bad it did back then :p

as for the tape, what do you mean by 'can look like conductive paint'? and is left over tape glue a problem?

Just thought of a real important thing, I am going to have to replace this Hyena Case/PSU As I am running on virtually no air intake :(, a new case is definitley in the books I have rather bad cooling (I grow weary of having the side panel open when oc'ed, dust is bad here also so I hate leaving it open).

I saw Hans' iCute he just put up for sale but I think I'll miss out (unless by some bizzare stroke of luck Hans feels sorry for me  ).

I don't think I'm an idiot, I used the superglue method to unlock my XP - It worked - and if you actually have any skills you won't make a mess either.

And you used the crayon/wax method - and that worked for you. That's good to hear. So from our combined experiences we can say that both methods will work (skill pending of course) and we can also say that calling people idiots for not doing something your way is, in itself idiotic. :D

Ok the conductive pen is on the way.... next order of business is get rid of this Hyena 300w PSU 'cause I don't think it's gonna last much longer. I sometimes get no post at friggin stock for goodness sakes!!!

Antallica

Yeah I looked at styles, yeah $150 sounds damn good to me. I take it has 2 fans on it? What's your +5v rail at?

heh I found a decent cooling measure..... 200mm cascade fan from the warehouse, it was just sitting there so I thought "ahh what the hell". 35C idle @ 1.825v sounds good to me.

*Update* I just suffered a system meltdown, damn pc froze to buggery when my 1600+ hit 45C, time to knock that fsb down.

Humantuckshop
10-07-2002, 12:08 AM
Yep, it's got two fans. My +5V rail is @ 5.05V - I'm currently using an Abit KR7A, when I was using an Iwill XP333 my +5V rail was @ 5.11V.

That 5.05V is with the Vcore @ 1.85V.

Sweet, it'll be stable as a rock.

Here's hoping my DRV2 will like low multi and high fsb when unlocked :(.

I will get my mates digicam and take some pics when I'm unlocking, and if it fries well I'll have pics posted and one hell of a classy keychain :D :D ;)

14x145 = 2030MHz. I don't think you'll be quite getting there. ;) Regardless of stepping. I reckon 166x10 = 1660MHz is a more serious and viable option. :D

EDIT: Decent RAM is obviously required for 166MHz FSB.

Oh hell no, I'll even be worried at 1.8Ghz (if I ever get there). I'll be tryin so many diff combinations when I unlock, I'll go crazy doing that. I'd better make some music cds so I don't get bored.. being that I do it right and don't fry (eggs anyone?? :D).

Well I doubt my TwinMOS 512MB DDR (Winbond type, not Hynix) will get that far.. heh :D :( Although I am running 151fsb stable (1.61Ghz) right now (even with this ghey Hyena), that has been confirmed with 50 loops of sandra burn in and a 3dmark.

I.R

Bringing back an old thread here but I had to share.....

I finally hit 1.8Ghz (2200+) this morning, I bothered trying hard so I got to my goal.

It was locked - 10.5x170mhz @ 1.8v. Temp wise it was 45C idle on v7+ @ 3200rpm.

Main problem was the ram only liking 166Mhz max @ DRAM 100mhz - CAS2. But it posted every time just windows would lock up or do other strange things after a while.

I'll be investing on some nice Mushkin ram to compensate this so I can run DRAM 133Mhz CAS2 again..

No pci devices crapped out either.
