Hi, Im just wondering when people post the temperatures on their cpu's are they talking about the external cpu temp or the cpu core? (ABSII or whatever) So when people say you should keep the temperature below 50 (amd) which temp are they meaning? Thanks.

the cpu temp they are referring to is usually the in-socket sensor underneath the cpu. sometime they have another probe pushed up against the edge of the core. these temps reported are really not able to be compared with other peoples temperatures. this is mainly due to manufacuring differences. also about the keep it under 50'c is a bit out of date these days. there was a time when for every 10'c above 50'c you halved the life expectancy of a chip. these days however you get quoted that the operating temperature of the chip is much higher (good up to 90'c with t-bred b's for example.). Basically if its stable and your not experiencing any problems then its not worth worrying too much about it at 50/60'c however if you are planning on overclocking then you should think aobut getting some good airflow happening. then also a better than standard cpu cooler.

oh ok, cool, so having 34 degrees under the cpu is ok then I guess. I was a bit worried because the monitoring hardware that came wiht my mobo said 54 degrees for the CPU core temperature and I wasnt sure what that meant.
As for overclocking, Im not sure its worth it on my XP 1800 palomino.
Thanks for the help.

I get 45* with my cpu readings are taken from the core.

I dont like it passing 50*C but it has hit 103*c+ before for a few seconds. Its still works!

Under full load i think 60 is a ok temp as long as it doesn't get too far past 65. I would say those temps are acceptable.
