View Full Version : help needed with proxy
I have a spare comp lying round so i want to put it to use as a proxy server.
I currently have 3 pc's + server running off a 4 port router
can i set it up like the pic and have a transparent proxy, or can i even have a proxy with this setup??

you could do it like that (it's all IP based anyway), but it might make more sense to have the proxy hooked between the adsl connection and a hub/switch...
for what you want to do it sounds like you may as well just use smoothwall/ipcop.. unless the rig is half decent in which case a host OS of your choice + apache (if you want to keep it simple) or squid (if you want to do it properly - smoothwall uses squid for its proxy handling)
i installed mandrake 9.1 last night but i couldn't for the life of me, figure out how to get squid to work, in 4 hours (with much googling) i managed to get full acess/power user or whatever and then ungzip the squid tarball or something, and that was as far as i got.
the reason i havent gone for smoothwall is because my router is 100Mbit and my 4 port hub is only 10Mbit
I might try this apache you speak of :)

Frazzle rock
Use clark connect....it install in a standalone mode where it only needs on nic. Also does proxying as well as a caching name server (DNS)

<edit> have been playing with it tonight and one thing annoyed me....port number for the proxy is 3128....no where in the docos...had to google for squid default port number </edit>
I set it up and have had it running since last night.
I must say, it's pretty sweet. Once i figured out how to work it, I had it up and running in no time :)

Fraz did you get a transparent proxy going or just a plain squid proxy?
i believe its squid.
The thing is i have to put the ip addy and port number into IE under the connections setting for it to use the proxy, this means that if the proxy box is off i have to go back to settings and disable it.
From what i have googled (havent had much time) there is nothing i can do about it except leave it on fulltime, mind you, now its quiet i might just do that
