Basically my cable router is gonna sit under my bed :D
I'm looking for a quiet HS/F for my CPU (Duron 800).
Case is going to be an Auriga Desktop
http://www.go4auriga.com/Case/2001DDH.gif.
Motherboard a Soltek KAV
So it can't be too tall or large :D

Have you got any suggestions?
($65 is probably my max)

so ur going to use a durrie 800 for a gateway router? a job that could easily be done by a p120...

Because its going to do other things such as FTP/Web/game/what ever the hell I want/ server :D

ftp/web serving on cable - still wont need the power of a durrie 800.. by memory the web server I was on at disturbed.net.nz was only something like a pentium 200 with 32 meg of ram or so...

game serving: you really dont want any other things going at the same time

security: you'll have little to none in this configuration

Maybe its just me but I'd do things a little differently ;)

Well, I asked for advice on a HS/F...... so erm. :(

system f - u could always just use the stock hsf...maybe u could even take of the puny fan on it and mount up a 120mm, blowing over it. U could run the 120mm on 7v. That would be pretty damn quiet.

and if its gonna be under your bed that'll muffle the noise a bit....
he could always get it running Seti@home or something like that...

okay okay i'll give you a break ;)

look for a Cooltron PCH610T, it'll perform on par with a 6cu+ and will be quiet as

The default AMD heatsink run @ 7v, with the Duron @ 1.55v (8x100).

You could underclock it to 500 - 600mhz with 1.3v and not run a fan at all.

I can get hold of a Volcano 7 (with the thermister? that controls the speed).
They usually run at around 3000rpm (at least with my old Xp1800)

heh, well so far I've spent a whole $35 on the CPU. $25 on the case and $40 on the motherboard.
Why get a p120 when I can get these and have some fun with it (like learn linux)

this is all assuming he got a stock cooler...

Underclocking would certainly work, so would a 120mm fan in the top of that case, extracting right over the cpu. Combine the two ideas and I think you'll have one helluva quiet rig, that can do all you require of it. :)

easy one... if you look around you can dig up old gear relatively cheaply, not neccessarily a p120 but thats an example... ask around, people know people and you could pick up an entire old system for probably 10-20 bucks...

biff in a couple of cheap NICs, stylespc (www.stylespc.com) had/has some on special for 20 bucks.. realtek nics which are perfect for the task.
then install smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org) on it.

smoothwall is based on linux.. if you really must you can disregard its interface and do everything by way of cli over ssl...

red interface goes to your cable modem
orange interface goes to your DMZ or "demilitiarised zone" this is where you put any servers for the outside world such as a web server. If you were lucky you would have picked up another box which you could use to run a web server from...
and finally the green interface goes to your internal network

Then you can use that durrie 800 for something more worthwhile.. like for example a secondary box for pure focus on linux (you could also get a 486, install redhat on it and learn linux the real mans way - bash cli via terraterm pro) or you could dedicate the durrie for lan gaming etc OR you could be kind and give it to your mum for an xmas pressie ;)

this balances everything you want to do, it balances security, and its piss cheap to implement. ;)

hey.. you asked.. plus getting it all networked and running is a lot of fun :D

man why bother with all those new ones.. just grab what you got.. doesn really matter if its some small s**t.. the boxed cooler with Duron 800 comes is 40x40 and i know cause i bought one.. and never had any problems with it.. sure u don wanna hear some whining under your bed right?
