well one of the good thing about linux is that most of the virus' and worms around are made for 'ol Bills Systems bu *nix users, there arnt too many viruses for nix.

I cant remember off the top of my head what package the firewall is but you could try to 'locate' or 'grep' for a firewall

i think there is one called fwbuilder, or you can always use the power of ipchains....

Red Hat's default firewall is called Lokkit. YOu can access it via the menu > System Tools > Lokkit . If you are using Gnome, you may find the location slightly different.

I found that editing IPCHAINS manually a bit hazardous, so I would not recommend this method for linux newbies.

There is a much user friendly firewall for Linux that I would recommend you download and use instead. Firestarter (http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/). Download the RPM for Red Hat 8/9 and follow the instructions for installing given on the website. Once you have installed it, you should make a shortcut to it on the desktop (note these instructions are for KDE, Gnome might be slightly different - just follow your nose in that case).

Right-click on the desktop and select "Create New" and then "Link to application". Replace the words "link to application" with "Firestarter". Then click on the Execute tab and browse to /usr/bin/firestarter and double-click on it. Then go back to the General tab and click on the Icon Image button. Then under Icon Source select "Other icons" and scroll down until you see the Firestart dragon icon. Double-click on this. Final click OK to exit out of the shortcut dialog box. You should now have a shortcut which will launch the program.

virs scanners try http://www.linux.org/apps/all/System/Anti-Virus.html

haven't realy looked into virus scanners for linux yet, it is on the infamous 'to do' list

Same with firewalls, I should look into this as well, just using the built in one in RH9 but the list is here:
http://www.linux.org/apps/all/Networking/Firewalls.html

These lists aren't complete but should have what you need.

Thanks for the links for the Linux virus scanners varkk :)

I have been trying a suitable home-user scanner. I just downloaded F-Prot Antivirus for Linux Workstations - for home users (http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/linux/) and it seems quite nice.

It did worry me slightly that I didn't have a antiviral/trojan scanner for Red Hat, even thought such gremlins do not usually target Linux. But, you can never be too complacent :p

Take a look here:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/networking.html#NETSECURITY

Has several howtos for linux firewalls.

Have a search for a project called gShield. Its a nice little firewall that seems very comprehensive especially when compared to lokkit.
