Hey guys I'm probably going to get ADSL in about a week but just wondering exactly what to do.

I have 2 computers which are 3 floors apart and want adsl on both of them.

I was considering getting 1 adsl modem, and 2 wireless netork cards.

Will this setup work to have adsl on both computers? or is there an alternative? Network wiring is very impracticale in my cicrumstances

Interesting problem, will some form of wireless networking work between 2 computers 3 floors apart..

I don't know, haven't been keeping up with wireless networking tech...but that's quite a distance with alot of potential for interferance..

You'll have to investigate the specifications of the wireless cards and technology that you can get a hold of methinks.. It's probably going to be an expensive option too: Wireless cards + wireless hub/switch (if your dsl router doesn't have wireless networking)

The only other option is the old el cheapo run the cat5 networking cable out the window and up the side of the building...

One of my suppliers recommends a site survey before you do the wireless thing, because depending on the construction of the building you could well find that the signal is blocked over such a distance.
3 floors = lots of wood/metal/concrete etc to interfere with things.

I think that means wandering around with a couple of laptops :)

Hrmmm its not a big building its just my house, the wireless network cards say they work up to 500m indoor and outdoor, so wouldnt that mean they can go thru a short distance of walls? No-one has a 500m long room with no walls :S

from my experience, the signal drops off big time through walls and floors (especially if they have the silver foil backed insulation building paper).

scuttle on trademe was selling a couple of those Network cards that use your existing phone lines as a 10Mbit network. He might still have them or maybe other places in nz would have them.
But that would only work if you have a phone plug in both rooms:)

I'm not sure about the wireless range, but just a note: don't get a usb modem or anything like that :) Get a router, hook it up to the wireless base unit. This way the base unit computer won't have to be on for the other computers to access the net.

DSE (yea yea I know) have a bit of kit that uses your houses 240v wiring as a network...ran it at a LAN awhile ago just to see how it went and was all good (only 10mb but still nice game pings and files transfered eventually....net would of course have no issues)

Old flatmate was a DSE manager so got to trial some of the new products to see what they could do

After all the time and expense on going wireless you have to wonder if its going to be worth it ?

Do you want the pc's networked ? If your not mad keen on it for gaming/ printer file sharing ability it might be cheaper and a lot quicker to get two internal adsl modems ?

Again it really depends on what you have and what you want to do ?

Do both pc's have phone jacks near them ? Give is a little more detail ... :D

You cannot simultaneously use adsl with 2 computers and 2 modems on the same phone line... Ask telecom

um, yes we all gathered that, thats why we were sugesting other networking solutions

this is roughly what i get you to mean.
you will need 2 network cards in the downstairs pc.
and also run a proxy for the upstairs.
you could either run a network cable outside or up the stairs.
alternatively the wireless sounds ok.
perhaps you could borrow a couple of cards from work/mates to test the signal loss through 2 floors.

How does this work? It would certainly tie up the houses phone lines wouldn't it?

DSE now have some mains networking equipment - you buy a couple and plug them in at the mains points closest to the computers and voila

costly though.. something like $120+ per powerpoint...

Ok, is it suitable for gaming because i might set up my network with this. I wont need it for file sharing so thats not a problem

Dude, I was talking about 802.11b wireless units... what's that got to do with phone lines?

what speed adsl are you going to get. at my work we have wireless and full speed jetstream. I mention this because the wireless has a slower transfer than the modem. hence going wireless can slow down your adsl connection (effectively, not literally). It is still fast but the difference is noticable.

for the cost of going wireless (disregarding that it would be handy to walk round your house with a laptop on the net) you could probably hire a builder to drill holes in your house with a long patch cable.

Does anyone know if these networks are good for gaming?

if the transfer rate is 10mps then it should be ok for gaming now, from my understanding almost, if not all games nowadays are happy with 10mps, but it wont be too far into the future before 100mbps is needed. thats not to say games now wouldn't use a little more though

no-one knows as the gear is fresh to dse's product lines and nobody wants to dish out that kind of money to find out...

If you ask DSE nicely they can supply me with some to review ;)

Their gear claims about 14mbit connectivity, and if it is so, it will be fine for gaming.
