Hi. Ive got a soltek frn2 board with a barton 2.5. I'm considering overclocking it when I have some time but am not sure which temperature reading to watch. At full load the soltek tempature program reads
CPU Die 37
ABS II 50
RT 1 27
Which reading do most people use in forums? As i dont want to compare my cpu die temp to someone elses abs temp...
...and whats the best free cpu monitoring program?

Thanks

CPU Die mostly... but i dont overclock as my PC will choke in this little box...

ABS? WTF? Dam some fancy PC yah got Anti Lock Brakes ^__^

ABS = anti burn shield. It'll kill your machine before the heat kills your cpu.

You can adjust this - leaving it at 50 is pretty safe for overclocking, though you might get annoyed with it on if you are really going to push your cpu. Oems don't mind cpu temps well above that.

ABSII isn't a number you choose. It is a readout.

edit: They just name it ABSII because in the bios you can preselect the shutdown temp. This ranges on my FRN-L from 75C > 90C i think. But as a readout it is a more (imo) accurate cpu temp readout.

The ABSII temp is the most accurate CPU temperature measurer you have. This is the one to pay attension to.
50 is quite high, but its not that bad.
If you were going to overclock you could probably expect temps in the 60's > high 60's. This would not be good. Before overclocking you should probably invest in a better heatsink or watercooling. An SLK700 might be a good idea (or even better an SLK800 if you can find it).

Generally people on these and other forums compare temps using the CPU Die readout. If you want to compare with others you should be using that. But you should be watching the ABSII with the other eye ;)

The best temp readout program would have to be Motherboard Monitor, which you can grab here: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

Checkout this page for how to configure it with the FRNL: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/comp/soltek.html
Basically, DISABLE "Detect SMbus before detecting....." in ADVANCED setup. Then you will have access to alot more temp readouts.

LM90 [remote] for ABSII
LM90 [local] for socket
Winbond 3 for diode

thanks monk.
At the moment I have a thermalright sk 600 with a 7200rpm fan.. are these temps a bit high for that?

Sorry Im not really sure what the 600 is capable of. Just don't overclock too much if you temps are already in the 50's.

Surely 50 degrees ABSII cant be that bad when the minimum you can set the ABSII shutdown is around 70-75 degrees C.
My ABSII temp is at 53 with the thermal sensor on the back of the CPU only reading 36. How does the mobo know what the internal cpu core temperature is anyway? I thought it just used some kind of formula to calculate it or something.....
