Well I've had a great day. I went and picked up an asus dvdrom to have a play with, got home and chucked her in, only to find XP was throwing a hissy fit.
For some reason kdcom.dll wouldn't load and so XP couldn't boot. Couldn't even get into safe mode.
So I chucked in my XP cd and tried to reinstall - copied all the files and went to setup, only to be told that:
"kdcom.dll had error 4"
Now this is probably the most informative error message I've even seen from MS, so I naturally knew exactly what the problem was
So I bit the bullet and formatted the partition (only to later realise I've lost my last backup of all my important stuff). Went to install and got the same error.
After I couple of failed attempts later, I resorted to trying a 98 install, only to find more problems.................I eventually managed to get 98 in there, and then upgraded.
Lets just say I'm not in a good mood

Its funny when people spout crap like that, Binky, you're obviously not very good at the internet.
DiscoPartyFeverStu - I am guessing you tried booting with AND without that DVDROM? Perhaps there was just a man...er a MALfunction at the time? Reseated the cableaux after you'd been rummaging about? I'm aware that you know what you're doing with regards to Interweb computers, but just checking all avenues, because XP cant be at fault, it just cant!
Its too sexy to break.
And Binky, what the hell is it you try to run that would possibly kill XP and make you go back to 2k? Because essentially its the same damn OS, just with more facials (chin omelettes) and blortware. Did you attempt to install some 9X drivers, instead of 2k varients or something? (Doubtful) Anyway, sorry if I seem overly harsh, its frustrating when people say 'OH MOES OMG STAY AWAY FROM TEH BNEW OSS BBQ!!!' without any decent reasoning. And before you start saying spyware/activation/pantydrop...there are ways around ALL of these, thats what makes the internet such a fantastic place for all your deviant behaviour!
Lots of love, gentlemen.

I too know the feeling of a XP screwup and fatal format which lost my data (that was before my cdrw came into play)........ I'd be more than just 'not in a good mood', I'd bust some caps :D
Are you oc'ed Stu? I doubt you are but I have seen many-o-screwups, such as XP thinking it's corrupted then I knock the fsb fown and it's all sweet. Another thought (should think this is definitley not the problem) is your HDD alright? Might have gone to buggery.
Yep, same damn platform SS. I prefer the flashy version with all the bells and whistles though ;)

Accoring to http://www.dynamiclink.host.sk/dll-files/library.k/Dll-Files-K.html the description of the file you mention is "Kernel Debugger HW Extension DLL 5.1.2600.0 (xpclient.010817-1148)".
From google, another person reported the same problem as you in a forum at http://www.phpbuilder.com/forum/read.php3?num=4&id=7260&loc=0&thread=7260 but got no replys. :(
Was there any more information with the origional error? Its a good idea to write down the stop code, and any additional information, and then do a google or similar on it to see what can be found.
Since you've reinstalled now, I suppose it doesn't matter about the origional problem as much. Did you try using the recovery console, and/or restoring from a last backup such as system state (where there any backups that were not on the same physical drive??). Or if no system state backup existed, you could have tried using the recovery console to restore the mentioned file, or replace it one from the first link posted.
Unless it is something to do with hardware changes which XP didn't like, then perhaps none of the above would have helped at all.
Also if you given the option to format a partition, and choose to do so, then this is in no way XP's fault, or any operating systems fault.

Yeah - I did some googlage once I was back up but didn't find much interesting and couldn't be bothered since I'd already formatted........
I tried to revert back to the last good config but got the same errors. What i couldn't understand was why I got the error after formatting the OS partition. I formatted it in PM7 and then good old fdisk but still got the same error

Yeah, I initially thought it might have been related to the DVD, but after removing it (and damn near everything else) still the same old story.

yeah - I only formatted as the last resort. That'll teach me for losing my backup disks

Ouch bummer about losing all the data  though I'm sure you'll have a good back up plan from now on ;)
That Asus DVD-ROM would be the E616 ?
That drive has a known built in regionfix (pushing in both buttons on boot). Now if you don't let go of the buttons soon enough the computer will hang.
You didn't accidentally be leaning against these buttons by any chance ??

um binky 2k isn't exactly trouble free... and 2k and xp are similar, i just prefer the no nonsense aproach of 2k (as opposed to xp).
that post was kinda pointless....
kinda makes a joke of your title too.

Remember to set your CPU and Memory speeds back to normal before installing any OS, no matter how stable the machines has been, if its going to get flakey Murphey says it'll happen while installing your OS!

Uh..... have I missed something?
Email MS, FFS!!!
That's why you pay so much for their OS's - the support. Now the last time I emailed them, I had a reply within 4 or 5 days, and it had the correct solution. They had good backup, too - asking if it had indeed worked afterwards.
What you waiting for? Send the email already!! :D

So let me get this straight.
You're all going to muck about, reformat, screw around, stuff up over and over - IGNORING the fact that MS could probably just give you the solution if you asked.
THEN you're all going to winge about how MS suck, and how XP sucks ( oops - you've already gone there  ), and generally get annoyed.
Is that it?

Bummer...
XP looks nice and all that.. but I've always found it's never worth going near a M$ OS unless at least a SP1 is out for it.
Also aside from the OS prob how's the DVD drive going, me thinking of getting one of them too..

It's doing the job nicely........but I have yet to actually try a DVD  . Been a little busy with a few *other* items recently ;)
I'll need to be giving her a spin in the next couple of days though.
