I have news of a fundrasier LAN in Chch for about 30 people. its going to be a 30 hour LAN from 14th september 10am to the 15th 6pm. the cost is $15 - to cover the cost of the 3 tournaments (prizes:D ), venue, refreashments i think and for fundrasing.

The tournaments havent been decided apon yet. but im going to push for a Wolf ET and Age of Empires 2 tournament:p .

the venue is a hall (forgot what one:rolleyes: ) ill post some more details when i get them. the organiser - hadley said he is keen to ask any questions on - boggle@globe.net.nz or
ph 03 337 1448.

any suggestions would be helpful and to see whos interested

yes I have a few questions....

1)Fundraiser! for whom?
2)where? do you have a picture of a map that can be posted?
3)If people turn up before 10am what will they be doing?
e.g. setting up/waiting about/having a bbq.
4)b.b.q. will there be one if the sun shines? sausage inna bun?
5) r18 event yes/no?
6) if no how young? and do we need to bring bugspray/kidspray/earplugs.
7)what does the venue have in the way of facilities?
eg grill/microwave/kettle
8) registration- when where and pre pay?
9) how does he plan to raise anything @$15 /head limit 30
venue + power + prizes + stress councelling afterwards.
10) umm yeah like umm...

i would be keen to come along, but first i must point out a few things:

Prizes:

make the prizes somthing small, like a 10 pack of cd's or a 4 pack of V / lift plus. Anything bigger than that is just a hassle, especially if there is a draw.

Date:

14 - 15 of september, meaning sunday to monday ? 13 - 14 would be better as thats saturday - sunday, meaning people who work on that monday dont have to have the day off for recovery.

Games:

Aoe2, while being a fine game, is just too out of date. Age of mythology or command and conquer generals would be better.

Play UT or UT2003 as one of the tournament games, as most people will be able to play them, and its easier to moderate as far as holding tournaments go.

Wolf: ET is a good game, but is team based so it wouldent be a good tournament game unless youre willing to give out prizes to every individual member of the winning team ;).

1) who for - St Martins Presbytarian Youth Group
2) where - St Martins Presbytarian Church, 43 St martins road. if someone could post a map that would be good
3) if you come early u can help set up or wait.
4) theres no news of a bbq. but if someone were to bring one i will bring my meat :D
5) R18 - no,
6) but no one below 15. - hopefully there will be enough mature people to make it a good LAN.
7) toilet, Zip (coffe), microwave, refreashments stand
8) ring for booking - 033371448 and you can pay before hand or pay at the door if theres room.
9) the venues for free only paying for power
10) ............... ill see wat i can do
 ?????

the prizes will be $20 for each tournament - so probally about a 20cd pack or something.

oh and i got the dates wrong - it is 13 - 14th

games -
CS
Battlefeild
UT2003
AOE2 - graphics (avg), gameplay (better than most)
Wolf ET - there must be some way to make this a tournament
AOM
WC3
Generals
Worms WP
..... there just suggestions

seeing im lendin my 16 port switch i get to chose one
:D - maybe wolf or AOE2

i guess its a majority vote on the other 2 so post ur opinions

the majority of people going will be Polytech and Uni. (it would be cool if we had a uni vs poly game :D )

any other questions i would be glad to answer - for some reason when hadley tryed to sign up on the forum it came up with some image verification problem (ive had another friend with the same problem  )

Sorry but the actual date is Friday the 12th September till Saturday the 13th September. Starting at 10am, finishing 6pm. I am going to try and cut a special deal with a pizza company to get cheaper pizzas on the Friday night. We will supply breakfast on the Saturday morning. As for lunch on Friday and Saturday we might sell some stuff there or take an order down to the local supermarket.
We will be selling coffee, tea, biscuits, V bottles, network cables, network cards, keyboards and mice, at the event.
I will offer a discounted rate for those who can't make before 7pm on the Friday, I am thinking of around the $12 mark.

Any questions you need answered feel free to post on this message board. Or alternatively ring or email me.

DR Anglo

is there a place for sleeping away from all the computers?
the last lan's i went to had pretty poor places to catch some zzzz's.
also, what are the rules for the lan? like dont and do things.

Hads
12-08-2003, 12:20 PM
There will be a room you can sleep in, but it may be rather cold, so I suggest stretchers and warm sleeping bags. But on the plus side it will be quiet. There is also a room right next to the main hall that will be warm, but could be noisy, take you pick.

As for rules, no speakers, headphones only. I can't think of an other rules at the moment except for just treat the venue with respect. I will want to use it again.

DR Anglo
13-08-2003, 01:52 PM
sory i wasnt specific on the rules. i meant things like alcahol and stuff like that, cause i dont want there to be any drunk people or stupid stuff happening.

Hads
13-08-2003, 02:12 PM
There will be no alcohol allowed. Also stupid behaviour, ie hacking and vandalism will be grounds for kicking people out.

Is this lan going to be a game only lan or will there be file sharing aswell(eg setup a dc server)? Also im all for a aoe2 match as ive spent a long time playing that game.. Can you also give me an idea on the venue itself, its just a hall, with chairs provided? and can you give me an idea on what i would need to bring with me, besides case/monitor/keyboard?
Cheers.

Ok, at the moment there are 6 definite people going, I'm going to post some notices round the uni to drumb up some interest.
You will need to bring your own network cable and money for lunch and dinner both days (breakfast will be free), I'd say around $20 should easilyt cover it. Chairs and tables will be provided.
The venue is basically a hall with a kitchen, toilets and a couple of side rooms.

If you plan to sleep you will need a stretcher and sleeping bag.

As for file sharing, I'm undecided on that at the moment, cause I'm not sure how much of the gaming performance it would effect. However I do know that there is unlikely to be a DC server, unless someone wants to supply one to get a discount on the price.:)

Im in the process of getting around to A) buying a car & b) Fixing the motorcycle. If i complete these tasks before this lan, I'll probably be keen on attending :) Also i can run a dc server when im there. i have a second pc though that i use for serving stuff. I could bring an extra 8port if its needed. um what else...
its nice and close to my place too.

DR Grim
19-08-2003, 03:42 AM
i got ur pm cadmax and sent u an email. sry on the delay i was in wellington for the first time and had trouble finding an I-cafe :P.

and snoopy exactly how good are u at aoe2, would u be willing to put ur money were ur mouth is :D (might make the game more interesting).

Hads
19-08-2003, 08:53 AM
If you like Artfice you could bring your 8port. However the hall circut breakers can't handle much more than 30 computers, but an extra switch shall make table arrangements easier. Also since we are using switches I don't imagine file sharing should be a problem.

I'm lowering the price for people who arrive after 6pm on Friday. It will now be $10 not $12.

It is a much more round figure.

hmmm, so very tempting to come, *looks at fileserver sitting on floor* that would make a good dc++ server, as soon as I get the new raid array up and working, backing up 512gb of data (yes oddly enough the amount i have to backup is precisely that much) could take some time, but whats a lan without a token Media Whore (or at least one in training :D)

the LAN was kind of a failure due to lack of people:confused: . but apart from that it was a very good LAN, i was only there for about 4 or so hours on friday into saturday with Grim and DRaxoT and there was only 5 other com's there and i was told that the maximum was about 10. but we did play a few games of BF 1942 and ET. On the whole it would have been awesome but it was far too close to L3, it should have been postponed about a month or so.

DR Anglo
19-09-2003, 09:21 AM

the venue was okay..in a good location ...so for quick fix inbetween L3's i recommend it..they gotta get some switching worked out but most dudes own a 100 switch anyhow..maybe do quick one dayers would be the go..

start friday night finish...late sat night

Can I ask why you guys wanted to run something that was both a 'LAN' and a 'fundraiser'.

My overwhelming impression from LANs is:

THERE IS NO MONEY IN LANNING.

Seriously, if you add up the door charges from L³s, and then all our costs, we'd probably have lost $5k+. If you want to make money, LAN's are the best idea.

Furthermore, if you do wind up making any money from a LAN, it's likely to have cost you a week or two of planning, and an entire solid weekend of work. Which is hardly a good return. There are sooooooooooo many much better ways of making money - I just honestly don't know why you guys are bothering.

This is just a realistic post. I'm not flaming you guys - just pointing out something that a LOT of people miss. I've seen people get into LANing with idea's about making lots of $$$s, and walk away minus tens of thousands of $$$s.

THERE IS NO MONEY IN LANNING.

DR Grim

In terms of a bussiness venture LANs are pretty new compared 2 other sportin events. U must admit KJ that over time runing LANs have started to become easyer - due to experience (not taking into fact technology and venue changes) LANs are only just now begining 2 gather momnentum with alot more people starting to join the craze.
I reckon i a few years L3 and other such lans will become a such a big event other people will want in on it. I mean i could be wrong something might hapen down the track that could stop lans all togther but at the mo there on the increase:D .

I admit its 2 unstable to insure a good profit all the time, but if done right u can come out with a bit of money and a fun time all round.

also i reckon that theres a lot more people out there that could be influenced into comin to lans ie. different age groups and occupations. I think an regular holiday lan could be quite popular for the younger folk - of course it would have to be designed completely different from other lans:p.

if there is a will there is a way...

Sumo
19-09-2003, 05:14 PM
I will admit not being at the first couple of L3s, however the last few have been pretty big and a drain on resources (that is man hours) When you get to the 1000 man LANs like the States then you will **** yourself.....

Keep trying though, you will get a niche in the LANing scene, as you know L3 doesn't do CS, and is an 18+ age group, thus there is a sector of the gaming scene you can get into!

dOg
19-09-2003, 11:15 PM
lmao..those two dr are decent wolfers..and like the raven shield..imfind the aiming in that off..

...its not about $$ i'm sure..he got the venue for free and it worked out okay..just timing was a little off..still its good to have an inbetween L3 Lan..if its not costing anything and keeps us ticking over then i dont see the harm..anyhow whens the next L3??...time for more Lan..

more is always better..less is bad..we get used to not going

we had a good game of ET and a rockin game of breakthrough sniper mode..so we got a fix ..sweet as..

Artifice

I Have to give Hads a thumbs up for his lan.
It was at its best on friday night.
though i was probably a little lanned out from the L3 and I had the flu. I still enjoyed myself. yah Grim and his fanboys kicked my arse at ET. But it was revenge for my battlefield exploits ;)
apparently he's planning the nest lan at the scout hall on centaurus rd. which should be a cosy fit with 30 or so pc's.

on a side not... I wonder how long it will take for wireless hubs to become common enough in chch to form 1 huge lan ;) mmm radio wave spammage.

Hads
23-09-2003, 10:37 AM
Well in reply to all these posts, I did end up making a little money, the work wasn't hard at all, it was more fun then anything, and it being small might have influenced this.

As with the scout hall lan, as I am no longer a venturer, it is a bit on the probable side whether they will go ahead. I talked to the leader about the idea and he is taking it to the fundraising committe.

But I do know this there will be another Youth group lan in the near future same venue and same sort of days, but in the uni holidays, after exams of course. And a great distance in time from any major LAN's of course.

I've thought about wireless, but the only problem with it is that it is rather slow at the moment, so not till it doubles once more to 108MB/s, at the moment it is at 54.
