what do guys think about having 2 different sizes of ram?
ie a friend only has 128m ddr and hes thinking about getting another 256..

i dont see any problem with that... its only a worry if youre using a paired ram system like 32/72pin... which DDR is not.. so yeah your mate should be fine

Yeah, there's normally nothing wrong with that.
Normally you'd also put the bigger ( and faster ) stick in the primary DIMM slot - especially if you can adjust memory timings on a per slot basis.
I wonder what nForce would do with different sized DIMMs....

What about mixing 100 mhz RAM with 133 stuff?
Obviously, they both would be running at whatever, mine was 148, but no matter what, when both lots of RAM were in together it would freeze when checking email or ICQing jerks

maybe because ur 100mhz ram cant be Oced to 148mhz,(thts a 48mhz Overclock) way running out of spec
ur 133mhz ram is only running 15mhz over the spec, so tht wouldnt cause to much of problems,
so yah try removing ur 100mhz ram, and ur system should run sweet.
or lower ur FSB

No.
The 100mhz RAM is the one without problems, thats the IBM stuff that goes @ 155 when needed.
The 133 stuff was Hyundai and I sold it because I couldnt be bothered with the hassles, but I STILL have to replace it :/
The only time I had an issue was when I ran the two lots together.
For interests sake, I notice that Hyundai 133 is CAS 3, yes IBM PC100 @ 133 is still CAS2...crazy.

IMO Hyundai ram is crap, iv got a 256mb Hyundai ram on my 2nd PC and it'll never boot at 133mhz@Cas2, its OEM for crying out loud :(

Maybe it was that 'batch' problem. ppl say it's best to get your RAM from one batch if getting more than one stick. But, then hardly anyone does that and you find most systems are fine with a generic n say kingmax running together - *shrug*.

Thats odd, Mine always ran fine at cas2 although the bus speed was kept at 133. Maybe u just had a bad stick. I used to run 3 256M hyundi sticks without any probs at that speed and they were all from different batches. They even looked different to eachother with different chips onboard.

I quite like my hyundai ram, runs fine @ 140fsb, cas2, 4 way interleave, the works....
Havent tried higher than that yet....

If you have two different speed RAM sticks, then you are meant to put the SLOWEST one in bank 0. This is for people who set (also the default setting) 'by speed' in the BIOS, also most motherboards alow some memory latency changes, but not all of them. This way the mobo will detect the RAM speed of the slowest DIMM and will set latencies to that. The otherway arround and the slow RAM will be overclocked too much and cause instability.
If you PC100 CAS 2 runs faster then PC133 CAS 3, then try putting the PC100 in Bank 0.

It was, I even tried putting the "faster" RAM in bank 0 to see if there was any possiblilty...and I slowed the lot down to 100mhz, still the same thing, I put it down to "plausibl....er INCOMPATIBILITY" :)

hmm a "friend" aye. Sounds like a scenario from an American movie to me. Where they ask someone advice for a friend, where the friend is them selves. ;)
