Hi all,

WHats the largest (in MHZ) slot 1 cpu made? And does anyone have a p3 one for sale? And will any slot 1 cpu work in any slot 1 MB?

I have a small HP p2 400 slot1 pc here i am using as a server and wouldnt mind giving a it a wee bit more herb. Dont wanna spend much at all as its all prety much redundant technology. Plus its a HP :)

cheers

Hmmm. Expensive things at the best of times - you do have the 100mhz fsb there don't you? If your on 66mhz then you're officially borked.

For the record pIII 1000e chips were made, which if you have an adaptor could be useful. Native slot one chips though - I'm trying to remeber if they went above 733mhz. Definitely slot one cumine chips though, which is nice.

To be honest the best option is to get a new to you SDR mobo for $40 and a durrie for $25 and run it at a gig. But then of course there's issues with case and psu and cooling etc also. Keep it in mind though - you might be in the area of diminishing returns.

Just grab a sloket, converts socket370 to slot1.

That's what I use on my soon to be multimedia box....a socket370 celeron *spit spit* 700 in a slot 1 ASUS P3V4X :D

depends on limitations on your current modo

66/100 FSB ?

133 FSB supported?
Then 1G is possible with sloket adaptor

I'd seriously question why you'd invest into expanding this redundant technology in the first place
*cut your loses and be done with it*

I have seen a working slot one 700MHz P3, not a slocket, but a proper slot1.

IMO, you are better of getting a duron and a cheap mobo.

He has a good point... I've seen the P3 700E slot one CPUs go on trade me for upwards of $200... absolutely ludicrous

I'm in aggreement with the majority so far.. It ain't worth the hassle / cost.

The mobo probably doesn't support over 100 FSB, it's HP so there won't have been any bios updates and there will be no community sites dedicated to continuing bios updates like eg: Abit and Asus BX chipset mobo's.

Finding a cheap 700mhz and over slot 1 or socket 370 cpu is next to impossible.

..
Alternatives:

Sell the thing to some moron on tradme for $$$ and put together a modem budget system.

or

Turn it into a server running linux or use it as a firewall / internet sharing machine with Smoothwall or IPCop.

ouch, bit ruff moving thisthread to newbies LOL

Anyway, yeah i have considered selling it and building a duron system, or even grabbing a second hand p3 or something from trademe....just thought if i got a cpu for $50 or something it would a been easier. Altho this MB doesnt support any drives over 30gig, and i wanna whack a new drive in it and it seems daft to buy anything under a 120 these days value wise.

Anyway guys, cheers for all the feedback :)

There was a 1ghz slot 1 made. These chips were intended as server cpu's. There is no difference between them and any other slot 1 coppermine. If you gotta a HP machine, you can pretty much forget about upgrading, since they lock you out of the bios or theres just no feature for setting changes if need be.

just to point out, yes they did make a slot 1 pentium 3 1000e / 100fsb / 256kb L2 cache. This cpu was very overclockable for a 1ghz cpu being based on the .18 micron process(coppermine).
I always wanted one of these in the old days (not that long ago really).

Cheers....although i did the right thing and built a new server machine, a 2000xp etc, and since i am a really nice guy i am giving the HP400mhz machine to my parents who enjoy surfing the web but do it very painfully on an older HP...a P1 166. They can go and make a coffee while it tries to load a webpage apparently LOL

Cheers for all the feedback though guys
