Hi all, I'm wondering if you guys and girls can help me narrow down a problem with my machine.

current specs

Amd xp 2000 cpu
epox 8kha+ m/b
2 * 256 pc 2700
20 gig ( 7200 rpm) h/d
400w p/s
etc

My machine is currently giving me a C1 ( ram problem) error on a block of this pc2700 ram ( double sided), Have tried in another 2 machines it's perfect. My other block of 256 is single sided and runs perfect. It happened after I could smell the machine had started to cook somewhere maybe a short ( i.e plastic burning). I took the m/b out and not a black mark anywhere. This problem block will boot if i clear the cmos and it is detected as PC1600 ( not pc2100) now, it gives a complety different value in the ram test everytime, then crashes with a c1 error loading into windows or just does not boot whatsoever.(

The machine is complety unstable, freezes installing windows, as I formated to make sure windows was not the problem. Flashed bios no luck, another vid card no luck, another power supply 300w would not boot it period. Tried another hardrive, The machine reboots evertime loading windows. The machine still reads FF ( saying it's ok ) unless the c1 erorr comes up. Cpu looks out as i pulled that out. I have also noticed a green line occasionly on the top of the screen when it frezes ( voltage prob?). The +5v line is the only one below what it should be, is this a problem?.

Did my m/b fry???,does it read single sided the same as doubled sided ram?, anything else I can TRY?

Thanks for your time and help :)

It sounds like your mobo has power issues dude - maybe a faulty capacitor.
My double side Kingmax PC2700 worked fine with my old 8KHA+.

The +5v line is the only one below what it should be

What do you mean by the 5V line is one below, exactly?

Do you mean it's running 1 volt below, ie: it's running @ 4V or do you mean 0.1 volts below, ie: it's running at 4.9V?

I think he means that the 5+ rail is the only one out of them all... 12v etc. that is under voltage..

All mine are above except for my 5+ rail which is at 4.83v

Well that depends how far below it is. If it's higher than 4.8V it shouldn't be a problem - in my experience anyway.

Yes, now 4.68v under load is not a good idea in my rig :(....... just hope you don't have any important documents open if you have that reading heh... I have learned the hard way ;).

Check the ATX power connector, and the mating connector on the mobo, make sure everything is aligned and nothing is suss.

on a similar note... my +5 rail is running at ~6.4v i think (its dismantled at the moment, so i cant check)

would this cause any problems (im upgrading the PSU soon anyway...) or would it just be when its lower than what its meant to be?

I should think 6.4v is rather bloody good (also much higher than I would imagine). What psu is it?

Just a generic 300w PSU. I'll get one of the leadman 400w when I can afford it...

I was just a bit concerned because the +3.3 is 3.25 and the +12 is 11.25 and the +5 goes the other direction right up to 6.24v (not 6.4 as I initially thought...)
