now XP Pro wont let me access any of my setup files(.exe and zps and the like)

messages i get are : Windows cannot access specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them.

and for zip files it's: Acess to D:\blah\blah\file.zp was denied.

yet again another noob question, are they doomed forever? or is there something i can do?

Change the permissions under Sharing - Securty or something similar.

Take Ownership of the Directory that's fecked.

if simple file sharing is disabled (it's in c.panel - folder options), and your partition is NTFS, you should be able to get this: (it's barely readable ;))

Note that you have to be logged in as administrator to access those security options.

I had a similar problem in that I was unable to delete a file as XP had restricted access to it after a botched copy of the file between drives. For some reason, I was not even able to edit the settings as admin, but as admin AND in safe mode I was, so if all else fails login as admin in safe mode. Then follow swiftynz's instructions

You should just 'upgrade' to windows 2000 and be done IMHO :D

This is totally of the topic but I felt compelled to post.

Why on earth do people feel that win2k is better in many ways than xp, surely microsoft realeased winxp knowing its better.

I wont start a this Os vs that Os discussion here but ... y'know?

As for your problem good sir ... dont you think a reformat would be good anyway, build the os from the bottom up the way you like it ?

I take it your still wanting to get all your data off the hard drive at the moment right ?:)

each os has different merits and dissadvantages.

Most of us prefer 2k, its a little slower, but more stable, and lacks all the bull**** addons. XP on the otherhand seems to aimed at retards, but it heaps boots faster, and has all the 'extra features'

I don't think DOS will have user permissions... maybe you could copy them to another directory in DOS.

However there is a huge flaw with that theory because if Microsoft had allowed that, there would be no point setting accounts.

just a question... have you encrypted the files by any chance?

if you encrypt files (make them private) and then forcefully reset the password for that user then the files will be unreadable because the password (which is now lost) is the key to decrypt them.

i've never actually used XP's file encryption so i have no idea if this is the problem but maybe changing your password to what it last was could help?

also try resetting the permissions/ownership for the folder above it and forcing the child objects to inherit the permissions and ticking "Replace ownership on subcontainers and objects".

also if the files aren't encrypted then you should be able to read them by putting the hard drive in another computer (i don't think the permissions carry over).

i just did a clean install of xp pro, 1 user:me as admin with no password.

i still cant understand why i cant access the files, i've been toying with them for ****ing ages but cant get access.

Have you tried granting your current user account the correct permissions to the folders or perhaps even the whole drive. If you reinstall windows your permissions on other drives can get a bit muddled. I think it might be the SID for the owner of the drive/ folders don't match up with the new admin account. So you don't have rights to do anything
