Ok, im sick of my crappy desktop speakers and am now looking round for a sweet new sound system. I dont really have a tight budget will pay anything round about the $700 mark. I was looking at a stereo, and want to know your opinions and reccommendations. I am really looking for the surround sound idea, so about 4 speakers, 2 in front and 2 behind me. Im reading product reviews and am looking in shops round town. Dont have the money but xmas is coming up and my parents said they will put money towards one, as im going to put it on hire purchase most proberley.
I will value any opinion that you guys put here, as I know you guys will stare me in the right direction.
Thanks alot for all your help so post away please:D

good place to start, pick up something cheap but decent and live with it while you save up more money for that dream rig...

Ive already got a fast enough rig at the moment, and not really looking to upgrade at the moment as just purchased another hard drive. I dont want anything second hand either.
Plus dont like cash converters never have. You must realise I watch movies and listen to music all the time so really need good quality sounds.

you want to buy yourself a 2nd hand hifi...you won't regret it, I've had mine for 3 yrs, longer than anything else hooked up to my rig, ad its the only thing I'm 100% happy with.. and it only cost $60

you must realise that by rig i do mean a stereo system, not your computer.
i do realise that you watch movies and yah de yah de yah.. youre exactly like me, I cant sit at a computer for more than 5 minutes without music playing... even if music isnt available i'll have some tune going through my head...
thats exactly why I understand that what you should really do is go to a place like cashies, pick up a second hand hifi (even a hifi mini-system if you can get your paws on one) and make do with it while you save up for that dream stereo... hell at the moment i'm still putting pennies away for a marantz/tannoy rig... just very slowly... but I'm happy with my what-hifi-5-star-champ hifi mini... (which entered the family valued at over 1300 bucks, and a few years down the track landed in my lap for $200)
and most stereos available from cashies would whip the living crap out of your "crappy desktop speakers"
with a few tricks of the trade, what may at first seem like a piece of crap stereo can be turned into a good listening system... trust me ;)

yeah, 2nd hand hifi, CC should have some pretty good ones. My Aiwa NSX-990 minisystem is about 6 years old and it has excellent sound, bass shaking the house like nobodys business (of course my SB Live! DE helps with the quality as well :D). Personally I prefer the old quality goods than todays rubbish.
Go 2nd hand man.

OR the other option of course is to buy an old amp, or build yourself one from a kitset and go the headphone route....

they just don't make em like they used to :( well, they do, but thew want you to pay more for em...
once a while ago I just about got a 1200w PA system from an auction for $900, it had an amp and 2 speaker stacks with 4x 12" in each..... but I run out of money so I had to stop bidding :( it would of kicked ass....... *sigh*
