In a word "arse" .. only get one if you are in a tremendous hurry can don't have time to find something better..like a proper switch

It's from DSE for god's sake...

being from dse dont really worry me, as long as it does what it spose to do....
If ya have any other internal or external switches for me to look at by all means post 'em in here. I dont mind spending another couple of dollars :D

DSE - yeah sure... the amount of stuff they re-package.

Better off getting an external one, most switches these days run at similar speeds so the speed would be close to a $200 switch. I'd say it would be the same case as with the dse nics, chepest available and repackaged. Just get a cheap $126 ext switch 8port from DragonPC or StylesPC

Lets see ..

Your profile says your in Palmy, hmm here www.inhouse.co.nz: Genric 5 port switch for $120 inc gst .. Micronet 8 port switch for $170

*ponders about his EXTERNAL 5 port*
*ponders about his EXTERNAL 16 port*
*ponders about the EXTERNAL 24 port down the hall*
*ponders about his EXTERNAL 32 port steaming his way*

Well, now I WOULD say this, but..... external are cheap. I'd go an 8 port ( OMG, I don't have an 8 - must collect them all!!! :D ). That way you can have a real LAN with mates for BDays and that.....
;)

Odd, none of you pointed out the fact that the internal switch/hub would suck the living sh!t out of the processor, especially during a game.

I am presuming the benefit to having an internal one is that you dont need a network card of your own? It has one built in for you? Or do you need one as well, and some absurdly short cable to go from on card to another.

That card seems a complete waste of fat woman crack. Get a cheap ass 8 port Surecomm switch from Tastech (http://www.tastech.co.nz) ... even with postage its still under $110

one of the ports can be switched between being a hub/switch port and being a standard nic port...

Another reason why they are looking good to me. I only have 1 NIC at the mo, and have at the bits n bobs to make a server.
All that i need is another nic/switch/hub. I thought that getting a switch is easier than another nic, since the misses has a computer as well i may as well have that hooked into the network as well.
Big learning curve for me.....i'm a n00b when it comes to networking

You're still better off having a network card per machine, and one external switch...honestly, less screwing about...less suck on the machines, more compatibility!

etc.

personaly, i'd go for the external switch...
reduces the nuber of cables going to ur computer to start off with....and thats a good thing

I think the are a dam good idea if you are on a budget because I have got one in my server & I have never have a problem with it
And for suck the living sh!t out of the processor they do not

yeah right. he was on a duron 650 with the card running full ****, and it still didnt make any difference to gaming etc, looks like i mite be going to DSE to gets me one :)

Externals seem like to much of a pain in the ass, with power, having to lug it around everywhere....etc. Not only that it wont be in my main machine, it'll be in my server - Duron 700 @ *** have to unlock it first :D

Good for n00B's on a budget?

n00B's

You want n00B proof? Go external switch. They don't need drivers. End story. There'll be one more NIC to install - but with generic $20 NIC's, reasonable drivers will be already included in your OS - even if that happens to be a Linux distro. That more proprietary switch card? Good luck, I hope they've got good drivers......

budget

Ah - now we're talking. That internal switch = 1x 5-port external switch + 1x NIC + 1x super-short cable. And the LHS of that = $100, while the external switch alone will eat that up ( add $25 to finish the deal ). So the internal is a good 20% cheaper... not a bad saving.

Range/flexibility

The main two PC's on my homeLAN are around 30m ( as the cable goes ) apart. And it's hard to get cables longer than 20m - so with that internal switch I'd effectively be..... screwed? For example ( seeing as you seem to be in the Dick Smith mood ), they don't sell anything longer than 10m ( giggles and realises he's never bought a cable at Dicky's ). Make sure you can either get long cables, or won't be spanning much distance with the internal.

Just some thoughts.....

What to you mean about drivers the do not need drivers for them to work as long as the computer is power up the switch will work you can be in the bios/dos/what ever and it will still work

yup the drivers are for the onboard nic only

obviously if you are half keenyou will get a external one but i still reckon they are good if you want no PSU and extra cables. The major problem is that if the host PC is not on then you dont have a network.:)

whetu

there are no extra cables.. (actually there are: 1x power cable to the external hub/switch) you are simply moving a common cable locale from one place to another...

as for the host pc being off.. if the host pc is a server, it shouldnt really be off in the first place ;)
