Hi guys,
My mother requires a quiet computer, so I would like suggestions as to which HSF would be the best bet. She really wants the Zalman one, and I dont blame her, it looks cool, and its supposed to be quite quiet.
Does anyone have any other solutions? Does the Zalman have the balls to keep a stock 1800+ running cool?

-OCZ GoliathSE will perform on par with a Zalman if paired with a Tt smart
-ThermalRight AX7 with a Tt smart will beat a Zalman by a couple of degrees and is about the same noise level
Yes it can keep a stock 1800+ cool...

I forgot to mention that I also said as a cheap option, the ThermalTake V7+ would do the trick on low setting, but that was a guess.
Anyone running an 1800+ with one of those coolers?
Alpha 8045 + Vantec Stealth. You can hear the Maxtor D740X's seeking sound.

well the alpha isnt exactly what you could call cheap...
i got a XP1800+ (OC'd to 1691mhz - 178 x 9.5) and a V7+
I'm running @ 46*C full load, on the low setting which is nice and quiet (~20cfm/dba)
The cool wheather means I can turn the fan down to low for the first time since I started OC'ing it :)

Hmm, 46 degrees load on low setting isnt too bad for an XP, overclocked one even!
My friend has the V7 which does a horrible job, it is constantly at its lowest and at load is 45 or so.
But everyone is happy!
It looks like the cheapest unit will suffice...although the Zalman looks very very cool...I'll have to think aboot it...should a certain retailer have some on special, of course it would be a goer :)

Yeah I reckon a V7+ on low speed. Also you can crank up the speed when she's not around hehe ;)
I got 1600+ oc'ed to 1900+ @ 1.85v (152fsb) goes up to 48C *Load* on low speed.

hmmmmmm, all depends on air thruput in the case....i usually get around 40 degrees with my XP1800

Well I got a crappy Hyena case (and you just know how crap those are!!) and a 80mm fan off my old IBM Aptiva from way back in '97, pulling air into my case. Damn that thing must be a 2000rpm or something cause it's crud :D

Whatabout a Globalwin TAK68? I got one on my overclocked Athlon which is probably throwing out more heat than a standard XP1800. They're rated to 2000+ and nice and quiet due to using two slower fans instead of one fast big mother. Hotchips do em for $67 too.
My Athlon 1200 @ 1360 never breaks 45 under load (looped benchmarks load)

Stove - yeah I considered that, but I think I may have misread the specs on the site, I thought it said they were a total of about 35 odd db or something...I wanted closer to 20-25odd
Anyway, I will definately consider that one now...thanks
Antallica/Control_Phreak - I dont live at home, I'm far too old for that ;) I have babies of my own! Driving 20 kms to change fan speeds would be a little draining hehe, cheers for your help though!
Binky Stunt Cat - It will have sh!t all throughput, it will be rigged for silence, so if I can get away with it, it will have CPU fan, northbridge fan, and PSU fans. Nothing more. If need be, I guess one 5v 120mm sucking air in at the front, if that 827sl or whatever the hell model iCute case comes with a 120mm then thats all good...

Well its pretty quiet, thats fer sure. If I want to check that my TAK68 is going I have to physically stick my ear next to the box. It was a replacement for a volcano6 and its way quieter.

Oh and the BEST bit?? The clip mechanism for mounting it is WAY cool: the clip engages all the lugs on the mobo so as to reduce stress on the board, and it uses a screw tightener rather than a bloody springy bit of metal. No screwdriver gashes in your motherboard anymore :D
anyone remember this??

haha, mostly strategy games :/ but she and my brothers will play murder simulators a lot also...she likes deus ex, so that will undoubtably get a lot of air time...also they all listen to music, so while spamming the net with sh!te about the joys of rugby, they will probably rock out (rocker style) to some happening beats...actually, my mother has a very similar taste in music as me, so I shouldnt take the piss :)
Cheers :)

Hans: how does that vantac stealth fan push enough air to keep ur cpu cool?
its quite quiet, so pushes a lot less air than other fans??
Actually, I've upgraded from Stealth. I've "upgraded" to the 80mm fan that comes with Icute case. Think its output is ~ 18 CFM. It's nearly silent as well. :D :D That makes me a happy man.
The load temp is ~ 45 while case @ 17.
Now, back to the topic. Yes, the Stealth is sufficient for the cooling. While I was using stealth, I usually run it @ 7V. (Still noisy for my taste).
(Makes a mental note to put up some Stealth for sale.)
