"Yeah the HD will need a SCSI controlller to run on a P1, just be sure to
get a
connector lead that has the 68pin high density connection for the
drive."
how much will one of these cost me and where do i get one ?

most any computer shop should be able to source you one (meaning smaller more specialised places!)
or you can buy them at DSE
I am not too sure on the prices, there are a huge range of different options, depending on the performance of the drive... They can get pretty expensive (upwards of $200)
Is the drive Ultra2? UltraWide? Ultra3? Ultra160? something else? hot-swap? You will need to know this when selecting a controller and a cable... whilst drives are backwards compatible (to some extent; there are also HVD and LVD drives which are NOT compatible but I won't get into this too much...) it is best to get a controller to match the speed of the drive or you will only get the performance of the slower component...
If you want more specific info let me know, I know a lot about SCSI but usually it is only used on servers ;o)
Why do you want SCSI in the first place?? Cheap drive???

look at the above page,
secondly, you can probably pickup a cheap SCSI controller card of trademe, it doesn't have to be flash, just make sure the pin's are corret, probably looking at around 40$ for a descent controller.

if it doesn't I think there are tools which can allow you to work around those restrictions; or you can just map the drive as something smaller (usually works!)
from personal experinece,
I've used a P166 with 64MB EDO RAM with a 2 SCSI HDD's, 10000rpm 4GB ones. Now it's just a desktop computer, 7 years ago it use to be a server. Anyway, the thing was soo fast, everything ran much quicker than most P2's with IDE HDD's I've used cause the HDD's were pretty quick. Performance wise, it's worth getting SCSI, but as long as you get it for cheap. :D
Personally, I wouldn't bother with a P1, get a cheap duron system with SDRAM and that will beat it performance wise quite a bit.

it's an old computer i got for free. it used to work, but then the hard drive stoped. i bought another one for $50 s/h for Dr Floppy, but it broke down within a month, and i was out $50 :(
i want to get it working for my mum, so she'll stop wanting to use mine to type with....
