The device is a Short-Wavelength Pluggable SFP Transceiver which is generally used for either 1.25Gb/s 1000Base-SX Ethernet or 1.0625Gb/s Fibre Channel in a SAN environment.
Do you know what it does? :) That's what I was after, I should have been more specific.

They are small Serial to Serial, hot swappable modules used to provide the media interface (copper or fibre)
The one you pictured above is a Fibre SFP.
Basically this device plugs into a port on a device (Switch generally) and extends the max distance between 2 devices while maintaing Gigabit speeds.
Your SFP will allow Gigabit speeds up to 500 Meters.
A Long Wave Laser GBIC or SFP - Up to 10 Kilometers
A Extended Long Wave Laser GBIC - Up to 80 Kilometers
Sweet, thanks for that Scorched. I thought a booster of some kind, but that clears it up well. Thanks for the good description :).
