Hey all, newbie here.

I'm looking to upgrade my machine and am considering overclocking and need some advice. I was wondering, generally if the 3GHZ baby tends to overclock any better than a 2.8? i.e. if I had both CPU's and overclocked them to the max, assuming everything else is equal, will the 3GHZ always be able to reach 200MHZ (roughly) higher than the 2.8 GHZ cpu?

Just interested as I would have thought there would be a theoretical maximum that any of the CPU's would reach and was wondering if the CPU would give out before the other components (due to FSB increase), and hence a 2.8 would be able to get as nearly the same max as a 3GHZ

Cheers

Intel or AMD
P4 or Athlon

there are lot's of difference's,

if you wan't a new CPU, tell us your budget, and we will tell you your option's.

also, look here to see how well CPU's OC

If money is no object then get a 3Ghz P4 chip, 800FSB. These generally haven't had as much luck as the 2.4c which has been reaching 3.6 on air. I dont think that the 2.8 or 3.0 o/c's better than each other, therefore the 3ghz would be a better choice. You are gonna need decent ram to get the best out of your chips. Equally, you could get an AMD, but I dont know much about these.

THanks guys.

I want to go Intel this time so Athlon's are out for me.

I'm happy to spend 600 or so for a new CPU if the differences are much of a muchness between anything priced higher but obviously if I could get significant increases with say an $800 CPU I would go about that high.

Yeah I know I need to look at that RAM. Been thinking PC3500 but if I can get a chip that goes higher easily I will go 3700 if need be.

Cheers again.

go for quality ram.. not just speed wise

Eg Corsair TwinX

Yeah I've been thinking about RAM. Some shop said that the Kingston HyperX PC3500 stuff was really good, but I did read an OC review that said it wasn't the best at overclocking. I might just try and stick with Corsair as it seems that's always good.
