Does any one else find Windows XP very sensitive? I've had to reformat and re-install everything from scratch again because it would randomly lock up in games.
I thinking I have installed something onto my pc which causes it to keep on randomly locking up. I am not sure what IT is at the moment, but I am getting to the bottom of it.

My install started off that way ( new OS's always seem to - before you've learnt to tweak em ), crashed every day or two ( say every 20-40 hours of operation.
It's all good now though, a few tweaks and a LOT of windows updates later, I haven't had a crash for... well - must be over a month now.... :)
Persevere. Install the OS and drivers. Download all the windows updates and use your tweaks. THEN start adding programs, one by one - and hammer down on any that cause issues. Of course, that's assuming you've got lots of time....
But I'd definately run a bare OS for a day or two to see if it was tweaked enough ( IE stable enough ;) ).

Mmm, I see. Yeah I should start doing that. Took me ages to get my previous hardware working 99.9% right all the time. Just going from that to this.. well it's a bit of a change. On some days it'll be really good, on others, not so good.
Well I've just installed Windows XP. Mmm, nice clouds and green grass, now , why does my lawn look so crappy ... ahhh .. anyways...
I have a feeling on what it is, but I am not 100% sure at the moment. Well I gots a couple days to fix this problem.

hmm I have to admit the first time I installed XP had no troubles, but got sick of its colourfullness and so on. Installed it again have been uding for about a month now and have really grown to like it now. The only problem I had was just my modem not being detected but got that sorted ages ago, apart from that Im sweet. I like XP now, it grows on ya!!:D

It definately does. I'm getting worried now, I've just installed the OS, then patched it, then the VIA 4n1 drivers (4.40), video drivers and then Direct X 8.1 [WinXP has support for my SBLive! anyways].
It crashed in my 3D Mark 2001 SE stability test which is a bad sign indeed! I've not uninstalled the WinXP patches and now benchmarking the current setup. I know it's bad, and it seems even MORE random than my last bug report [as in I had no lock ups and crashes when i did have them]. ... as I was typing this, it crashed. I am not a happy chappy at all. I can't think of any thing now. Mmmm, maybe it is my Direct X 8.1 setup ... ga'h!!
Lastly could it be hardware issues? I've put a new heatsink + AS3 on my cpu, and the temperatures are lower than before. In addition I also put some AS3 on my GF4. I clipped the heatsink back on, and since it had sping loaded clips, I didn't really think of the heat sink beng a worry as I could pick up the card by the heatsink alone. The graphics do not show artifacts or anything, the computer just locks up.
I'll make a further post in the troubleshooting section
2 much thinking

hmm seems strange or kinda normal sometimes when dealing with electronics and 1's & 0's
i bet it will come right and you'll never find the problem, computers are just like that sometimes :D
make sure you restart after loading 3dmark, i had a problem with it crashing but i put that down to the fact i didn't restart after installation. runs fine now it's reloaded
