2 much thinking

just wondering what people think about firewalls on their pc and if they have a firewall which one?
when we first got jetstart i loaded Norton AV and personal firewall on cause being on the net 24hrs a day kinda made me a little paranoid but i just reformated and loaded AV back on but dont think ill worry about the firewall. Since im tending to backup and reformat so often i don't see it as too much of a problem
your thoughts?

I don't bother with a firewall. i think xp comes with one built in, altho i disable that, and I am behind a router so that is enuff security 4 me, and I havent been ha><ed b4, until someone deletes some of my **** (which by the way is the ilegal part of hacking), then I'll be pissed off and might use one

I've used ZoneAlarm and Tiny. I like Tiny the most, ZoneAlarm doesn't like it if you increase the FSB, anyone else noticed this?

yea im behind a router too (jetstart...obvious) and i still got my fair share of blocked atemped accesses. probably not from people intending to gain entry, but just general internet crap.
one annoying thing with norton personal firewall 2001 is the lack of network area control, its either all or nothing which is a pain when working on 1 computer from another in the house

I may be wrong but dont routers only have a layer of NAT/NAPT which is generally regarded as NOT constituting a firewall...
oh yeah.. smoothwall (www.smoothwall.org) :p
[edit] weeeell i decided I could be a bit more helpful and less biased.
I have toyed with tiny, norton, sygate, blackice, and a few others.
I hated blackice. I like tiny and sygate, but norton, for me, has the whole package going. I like it for its mom and pop factor, by that I mean its piss easy to setup, update, has a built in popup killer, can filter your browsing (built in net nanny feature) so yeah...
but I hated all of them for networking, ESPECIALLY norton. with norton going, its a real ARSE to do anything network related. So I dug up an old box, installed smoothwall, and I was away laughing.

I use norton 2002, only problem I find is that ICQ can't establish a direct connection to other users. Love the ad filter, in about 45 mins online it has blocked about 500 ads!
Also Norton says in it's documentation it is designed for end user computers, not as a networking utility, only as a personal firewall.
Having said all that I am fixing up an old machine to run smoothwall, one advantage is if I reformat/reinstall I don't need to setup the firewall agian

there is a reason because ZA is designed for idiots in my opinion who want protection straight out of the box....... unfortunately this means it tends to be a bit inflexible.........
go tiny

Tiny definately seems to be faster and less finicky then Zone Alarm....

I don't use a firewall, everything I do on my computer I do so as not to reveal any personal info about myself, and I don't use credit cards over the internet and that sort of stuff. If someone were to hack in my comp all they'll find out is that I like playing games and watching movies and that my name is Kevin and my wife's is Katrina. As far as anyone using my computer for DOS attacks....
well..... I'm not exactly Telecom or Xtra's biggest fan anyway.

I don't want to diss but damn that's a fairly foolish attitude

So what, you don't use credit cards over the internet.. I bet you still have personal documents on your computer right? .. Would you mind a bum walking in off the street and tramping around your house looking, taking or changing whatever they wanted.. of course not...

Just wait till you're on the recieving end of constant floods and DOS attacks... I'm sure you'd love to be flooded off the internet everytime you tried to connect. You wouldn't help a criminal rob a bank or help a shop lifter steal would you?
Decent security is just damn comon sense.

Mandrake-SNF :)
Tiny (Kerio) Winroute is pretty good for a firewall too (as opposed to Tiny personal firewall)

I really, seriously, have NO personally identifiable information on my computer. Really!

I have to admit that was more sarcastic than anything... The MAIN reason I don't use a firewall is because every single firewall I've ever had causes issues with half of my programs, i.e. multiplayer games, chat progs, etc., hell even Microshaft's firewall screws up my Unreal Tournament games....
But, no, I don't underestimate the value of firewalls, I've just been seriously put-off using them. ;)
