Your thoughts people.

It's pretty sick alright...

If they carry through with this idea Microsoft is going to shoot themselves in the foot.

Better start installing Linux now in advance..

Yeah I have heard a bit about it. I'm hoping it dies a horrible death, although it has some big companies who make some big contributions to the right senator/congress campaigns to actually become mandatory.

Yes it is disgusting.

So, simply put, TCPA and Palladium provide security for the vendor and software supplier (ie: M$) and destroy your computers value because you will be unable to upgrade your system configuration!?
I really can't see how that is legal, but anyway, expect a huge court case over it.

yeah i've heard about it. the word "trust" has no meaning anymore.

but the good news is it's impossible to implement 100% successfully. there will always be people "on the edge" managing to defeat the system. if it goes ahead, it'll just fuel the hacking/phreaking culture.

The first article on this I saw started with something along the lines of: "the words Microsoft and trust don't go together, unless you stick an 'anti-' in the middle"

Well MS are the ones who are pushing it to a new level, TCPA is nothing new, but it is Palladium which is being pushed by MS

true, BUT intel and ibm still have their hands caught in the cookie jar as well, you cant just point finger at ms alone.

dont get me wrong, i'm not sticking up for ms, i'm only trying to guide some level-headed and realistic/unbiased thought here.

I hope it never turns out...

If it does... as long as AMD doesn't add that **** into there processors then most of us will be prompty moving onto linux or BSD + amd

If Linux and AMD platforms didn't have TCPA platforms built in then msot software would be made to only work on machines with the correct TCPA codes.

Essentially, what software manufacturers wouldn't include this feature to stop copywriters? So I think it would spell the end for hardware manufacturers who didn't comply, and posibly spell the end for linux.

Who would want linux if no games or software can run on it?

Well the big distributions(RedHat, Mandrake etc) will probably go to the trouble of getting certified, but the problem lies in that you can't run your own code, or even recompile the kernal itself, effectivly castrating GPL, alot are saying that is the aim of Palladium

if this does eventuate my interest in computers will cease altogether... unless it can be cracked. in that case my interest will we redoubled :D.

this is absolutely disgusting and i dont think it will pass. the anti-trust violations are too numerous to mention and i cant believe anyone could support such a blatant violation of people's rights

just saw something else... the TCPA website (http://www.trustedcomputing.org/tcpaasp4/index.asp) lists quite a few companies as members... and that's only the newest members list....

it's worrying to say the least.

/edit
it doesn't seem that membership indicates support for tcpa... just had me worried at first! i mean 180 companies including the largest players is nothing to sneeze at....

ok just remember, TCPA and Palladium are completely different things, TCPA is a group of companines looking to make a secure platform for online transactions etc. Palladium is a MS driven thing which basically takes what the TCPA is trying to achieve to a whole new level. Also TCPA is nothing new it has been around for a while, it is only recently that it has come to light thanks mainly to press about Palladium and a number of articles talking about them both as the same thing

Is that a rhetorical question?

And WHAT exactly do you think EVERY hacker on the planet is gonna want to do first the moment they get their hands on some hardware locking code? Heh - oooo yes, I see 'patches' on release days, along with the software.... :D

there is a very simple way of avoiding this.

take your current pc..........keep it.............upgrade it to the baddest the week before this bs is implemented (if it is), and your gurenteed to still run the only games people will play at lans.

Good writeup here (http://www.overclockers.com/tips053/) on the matter.
Very thought provoking :)
