Well being stuck with dial up i have not much knowledge of xDSL stuff.

are the modems dfferent for DSL and ADSL?
Cable is DSL right? and requires a DSL modem and not a o-so-common ADSL modem right?

if so anyone know a place that sells DSL modems so you dont have to rent one from Telstra?

I was always under the impression that DSL and ADSL where one and the same, and cable something different.

The easiest way to lay your hands on a cable modem is to find an old ISA NIC with a BNC connection.

Cable = telstra (256K+), hereby known as the monopolist # 1 public enemy.

xDSL is the format NZ uses for DSL (simply meaning digital subsciber line). For instance frame over SHDSL (syncronous high speed DSL) is now available.

Cable, uses fibre down your street to coax into your house, gets split into TV and data/phone.

DSL, uses copper to get high speed. has distance limitations truncking back to the exchange.

Telstra will let you buy cable modems. But will still charge you a surcharge. You'll also get no support unless you get one from them.

nah, its split, diff freq ranges for diff uses (tv/phone/net) think of it as tcp/ip over coax using half the bandwidth
