AOpen CD-Writer 40x12x48x

Has anyone used this cd writer before ? I heard that it could be quite noisy. I'm looking to buy a cd writer but I would prefer it to be quiet. Also can this cdwriter copy most things with cd protection?
Thanks for the help.

I don't know how good they are or not. But I ordered one today.

From what I've heard about other Aopen CDRWs they should be preddy damn good. CloneCD list it down as being fully compatible.

Also it's such a good price.

Well, it would seem to me that the faster a writer writes, the noisier it's gonna be.

If I were me ( and I am ), I'd just buy a 24X writer. After all, you just can't buy CD-R's that can be writen at 40X easily, and even if you can get hold of them, they're a lot more expensive than 12X writable CD's and the like ( Transonic's are $1 each, and I've never had one coaster without it being my fault ).

Just like those ridiculous 52X CD-ROM's I suppose, which are also stupidly noisy, but in real life use just aren't much faster than 32X drives ( which are quiet ).

A slower drive'll also save a lot of cash. Just a few questions:

What made you choose the 40X writer over a slower one?
CAN you get 40X writable media easily? ( I can't )
How much do you use your current writer?

I was initially looking for a 24x one but the price for this one is $160 inc gst :)

I was going to get the LG 24x one for $150 but my friend told me its not good (no ata 33 support)

The only other cd writer i'm considering is the liteon ones but I can't find it near these prices.

Ah... $160.... :D :D :D

NICE.

In that case, I'd buy it. Most CD-Writing software ( I use NERO - yes, it came with my burner ) allows you to set the write speed, so if 40X is too noisy, you can always just set it to write at 24X or 16X or whatever - that should sort out any noise.

I imagine the noise of the drive simply comes from the sheer speed the disc is spinning at at 40X. 40X CD-ROM drives make a bit of noise when they're fully spun up, too ( only it's harder to limit the speed of a CD-ROM drive, so you can't easily get rid of that noise ).

I chose the 40x one because it is a good price compared to others.

hmmm 40x media, have you ever looked at what it says on a Melody CD-R lately. They're 10 for $10 and are 40x. But quite a few CD-Rs will burn at around that speed anyway.

How often do I use my current one. The current CDRW is an 8x one which is my stepdads. This one that I have ordered is going to be used for my computer that I am in the process of getting together. Yes I do use it quite a lot for backing up documents and transferring stuff to college and the like.

bollox the LG doesn't support ATA.. I have one and I can tell you it quite surely does......pity its not ATA 100 as that would go well with my DVD rom

BTW welcome to the forums?

WHERE???

I was using BlankCD.co.nz (http://www.blankcd.co.nz/) as a guide. Have a look at their ( large ) selection of media - most are 24X writable, with only the Imation 700MB 50 spindle's being 40X compatiable. And they're about TWICE THE PRICE of some of the other brands per CD - @ $1.30 each!!

LG specs says no UDMA 33 support which i was told was same as no ATA 33 (if its not the same thing, sorry about that..I dunno what all the terms mean) I read some reviews on the LG and they say that no UDMA 33 support is considered to be strange nowadays.

and thanks for the welcome :)

PS: is there a way to slow down cdrom ? i have a 40x samsung one and its very noisy when it spins up and spins down ...high pitch annoying sound.

Yeah BlankCD.co.nz is good. But I just use Melody's from DSE at 10 for $10. They just come shrink wrapped and in a cardboard box. Just stick them on an old spindle to make it easier.

I've also got them from Noel Leemings and Bond and Bond before.

/edit to adjust the speed of a CD-ROM drive I'm sure you can use Nero Drive Speed or Nero CD Speed. They come with Nero Burning ROM they are located in teh Toolkit.

Wouldn't that mean that it's not an ATAPI CD-ROM and therefore completely backwards if it were true(which it's probably not)?
