Hey techies, just wanting some ideas as to why cs is crashing with my Diamond Monster MX300 (vortex2 based).

Ive only got the card today and cs is now crashing every 1-5mins, i dont wanna go back to my SB16 .

Specs:

Celeron 433 @ 540mhz 83fsb
128mb ram pc-100,133
Geforce2 MX orginal 32mb (leadtek)
Win95 (i know, but its not my fault ** FruitLooPs glares at mobo)
Diamond Monster MX300 soundcard
20gig quantum hdd 7200rpm

Now my computer would run fine with the old sound card in (the sb16 from 1995 era) cs had never crashed once. Now that the monster is installed it just crashes after a min or so - complete hardlock, cant do anything but kick reboot button.

Ive tried these things so far:
Enabling & disabling A3D in cstrike
Enabling & diabling EAX in cstrike
Combonations of both.

none of that worked, I have no idea about these cards or if there are alturnative drivers. Ive heard good things about them and i got if free so im not complaining. Ive tried it in Quake3 and it went fine for the 30mins i played for. Windows *claims its not conflicting with anything.

Could it be my 83fsb making the card unstable ? but then surely it would be unstable in quake3 and desktop right ??

Im gonna look about and see if there are any documents on this problem or possible fixes.

Thx in advance :)

Take a systematic approach and test one thing at a time...

First you probably want to turn the fsb back down to default to see if that's the problem. If it is... bugger..

If it isn't, which dirvers are you using.. search the internet for newer one.. try that... search for half life sound patches / updates / fixes..

Some sites to go to:

*resists the urge to mock teh CStrike player*
:p :D

Yeah - it may be that your fsb was stable before, but that that sound card doesn't like the higher PCI speed ( it's a shame, but it may just be the case :( ).

*can't... resist*

...and there's always RTCW :D.

He said it was fine when he was playing Quake3 @ 83MHz FSB tho. So I don't think it will be an FSB issue...... Check for a CS patch...... If there isn't one try reinstalling CS.

What's your MB?? I find early Via 693/694 chipsets to be buggy. They tend to crash with vortex based cards.

Aye? My high-performance rig? I still play RTCW @ 800x600x16.....

Honest, it's just.... not.... smooth... enough. My 60 pings piss me off too, grrrr - must... LAN....
:D

Hehe - if experience means anything, then there's a good chance Hans has hit the nail on the head. But Quake 3 works fine with the new sound card? ( That's kinda weird )

Yeah it's probably gonna be turn out to be either:

mobo conflict, or crap drivers, or CS prob

...
FruitLooPs: what brand, model, type.. of motherboard do ya have?

Tis true i have a bad motherboard (well the fact it wont boot anything cept win95 with my gforce makes me think its crap :p )

Its a TMC T16NB motherboard, Intel I440BX chipset. I think i might try taking the fsb back and trying it, but i don't see why it would help since q3 works fine with 83mhz, still could be one of those things. :(

Dont mock teh cs player, i hardly ever play it now anyway (not like i have a choice anymore anyway  )

I would and do occassionaly play quake3 mods on the net like Freeze Tag, but quite honestly my 33k modem just don't hack anything anymore LOL.

Will try looking for diff driver version, thx for the replies guys. :)

found this slightly related article: http://www.vortexofsound.com/techhelp/gm_hl.htm

still doesnt say jack about crashing out right. :(

**UPDATE**

Found that im using 2nd to latest drivers for the card, found the newest version and getting them overnight. Tell you guys in the morning if it fixes it, also i will try the fsb thing now.

:)

**UPDATE No.2 ** :D

Bad news, installed new drivers work fine, cept for cs again same thing happened just hardlock'd after a minute or so.

Any more ideas guys ?

New computer. :p

Either that or look around for a better mobo.

Have you reinstalled CS yet?

the vortex chipsets have an issue with PCI latency on a number of mobos... from memory it usually just caused the sound to cut out after a while rather than causing the machine to hang.

could be related... i'll see if i can dig up some more info...

thx for the replies.

As for a new mobo i so would but im absoulutly skint so thats not gonna happen, although i do have another motherboard that i was using previously (tekram apollo pro or something, via chipset) but i appeared to have less overclocking options and my gfx card and hdd died in it, so im a little suspect of it.

lol still havn't tried the fsb - will do now. :)

**** .... tried fsb @ 66mhz and it seemed to work fine in cstrike aswell :( i dont wanna have to unclock for this soundcard. Damnit not as robust as my old isa sb16 then :o

anybody know how to make a batch file or somehting that uses softfsb to change the fsb when i run cstrike ?? :D Maybe i'll just have to do it manually.

well thats that, the guy now wants his soundcard back off me. Turns out that the one he bought is stuffed or so he *claims. Oh well back to the SB16 :( Still at least i can use 83fsb. :D

Oh yeah, the old - 'one I got is stuffed trick'.

Maybe you should stuff his MX300 up then. And then give him the old - 'it was working when I had it'. ;)

YES !, i've got it back :D . Went over and helped him with his new computer, asked if he was using his "old" soundcard and he said he wasn't and that he was using his "better" vibra128 :D . He said i can have the old one if i want it, so i have it now.

Good timing aswell - 83fsb has taken its toll on my SB16 which now only occassionally goes :o
