My Mobo didn't come with a thermistor to read the temperature of my CPU  , though it does say in the back of the manual to go into an electronics store and ask for a 10Kohm thermistor (NTC type). I did that today and got nothing, DSE only have 100Kohm thermistors . Ive tried Jaycar (http://www.jaycar.co.nz) and Sicom (http://www.sicom.co.nz) and I think the closest I got to 10K was 4K7 (4700 Ohms). Help, where else could I try? Or alternatively, what other resistances could be acceptable?

Thx

two 4.7k thermistors in series..heh, but then both thermisters would have to be on whatever ur monitoring. ----\4.7k\---\4.7k\---- (series) - I know ive seen 10k ones somewhere - hmm, but where.

If it was a PTC thermistor you could use a 5k resistor in series with a 4.7k thermistor.

Some of this may go straight over your head. Unless you use the correct 10K ohm thermister, the dynamice range of it will be different from what will be required.

eg if you use a 5k + 5k resistor, your temperatures will be accurate at one reading only (who knows which one) and then an increase in temperature will only produce a small resistance changes compared to a 10K thermister, so your temps will be out of whack.

Also, if you motherboard doesn't have onboard Winbond temperature sensing, then getting a thermister is pointless, you still won't be able to get it to work.

What type of mobo do you have? Does it support hardware monitoring?

Another thought, are you just missing a remote thermister for remote sensing, which means you probably still have a sensor underneath the CPU. Have you looked for temperatures in your BIOS?

Thanks Deviant. You were right, some of that did go straight over my head, Ive only got half of a 6th form physics course under my belt :p, but I understood when you said that my temps would be out of whack.
I have an Abit VA6 (http://www.abit.com.tw/abitweb/webjsp/english/pt_main_back.jsp?pPRODUCT_TYPE=MotherBoard&pMODEL_NAME=VA6). I've checked the BIOS and it does support hardware monitoring, it has a system temperature but a blank reading for the CPU temp. In the back of the manual it says that it doesn't come with a thermistor but I can get one at any electronics store.

NZ needs a RadioShack (http://www.radioshack.com)

dick smith is NZs radio shack.... I got one I'll swap you for a pie (mmm pie), dunno if its 10k though, its the sensor from a soltek KAV, never been used, presuming its bout 10k

Heh, I've got one too from an old Solteck board, and it's 12k cold, and drops to 8k when I warm it up with my fingers. So must be a 10k one.

This is probably what Undr8d probably needs, probably has a two pin input plug on his mobo for it.

Is this what you need Undr8d?

well here's an idea: ask a computer shop. they're on optional extra on a number of mobos so there are bound to be a few retailers that can source em.
