well here is mine.... installed windows three days ago so it is a bit barren..... needs more random folders/files cluttering the desktop to feel more homely

did I mention that the program I posted rocks...... highly customizable..... have only played with it for about ten minutes.. and came up with what is in the bottom right

um yes binky i know that's what you meant. you dont drag the whole taskbar, you only drag the one toolbar. see the little line on the left side of it? drag that to the center of your screen. it should appear as a window. then you can move it to the side of the screen... easy really. ;)

sorry to bump but the "Useful App Thread" has caused me to update after using some of those tools ;)

the top row of icons on the taskbar are all menus and the two icons in the very bottom corner of the sys tray are HD temps :)

Hahaha - you're using 199MB of RAM. Even in teh bloated XP with MSNM, ICQ, Seti and IE ( similar to what you've got above ) open I'm only using around 160MB.... Talk about the users making up for the effeciencies of the OS :rolleyes:

i've only recently upgraded to 512mb of ram and after sp1 i'll probably make the move to xp. but win2k sp3 is coming first!! :p :D

the program that does the drive temps is DTemp. it's such a dam simple little proggie that it doesn't even list its own website!! i found it tho: http://private.peterlink.ru/tochinov/

it hasn't been updated since last year but it does the trick ;)

oops, looks like i sparked another xp/2k debate!! :I :I

anywayz... none of those icons in my sys tray are "pretty pictures". although i admit some could be removed. most are neccesary.

top row: lan connection, DU meter, Volume control, Powerstrip, Getright, NAV, Gigabyte Utility manager (hmm think i'll remove this), Virtual CD, MBM5, BulletProof FTP server.

bottom row: Coolmon, MSN, Lanchat, UD, ZoneAlarm, IEnabler (requried to access the net on the uni LAN), ICQ, Winamp, DTemp, DTemp.

the only one i would consider removing is the gigabyte util manager. all the others are very useful so :p

/edit: and KJ who said that we didn't like the pretty pictures just because they use ram?!

I would think the important bit is the '19"' quality, not the fact that it's another monitor.

Heck, my 1600x1200 primary monitor has more pixel space than your two 1024x768 monitors combined! :p

Antallica, I've got a GeForce 256 SDR card as my primary card....and you can all SHUDDUP alright :p and my second monitor is run by Ol' Faithful (My Voodoo Banshee :D )

KJ, monitor quality will be a factor (as well as price) when I buy my 19 inch, as I have a lot of other stuff to purchase as well, but hopefully I'll have these 2 15 inch monitors sitting either side of it so :p

Well, I have 2 of my 'normal' desktops..

The first is in Slackware 8 w/ Enlightenment and the chaos theme w/ the chaos winamp skin and Mplayer playing a disturbed song..

hehe, why is it that almost every screenshot I see from a *nix desktop has to include one or more of the following (it seems generally more the better):

- IRC Terminal (seems to be in almost all screenshots)
- Recompiling of misc app/util/whateva
- Video being played back
- An image being edited in a graphics editor
- Audio application open and playing music
- Some sort of ramdom 3D display type thing which serves no real purpose
- Telnet/SSH connection open to a remote computer
- Shell session on local computer
- List of processes showing in shell session
- "WebCam" type application showing what is currently on the camera

And tsk tsk, do I see someone logged in as root.

We used to have a guy at my old work who used enlightnment, and I have to say, even at the time which was a while ago now, it did look quite nice.

And I always have winamp open, forcive habbit really. I always have to have something to listen to or it's just not cricket.

And yes, I'm always online from root@, I hate having no permissions. It'd be really hard to do anything bad to my box anyway.
Plus, Identd always returns 'oiad' not my real ident, and everything else (clients etc) are spoofed to not show my real ip/hostname on EFnet ;) (God bless knowing server admins)

Netcaptors just a shell for IE, my IE is buggered so I gotta use NC. It's actually not too bad for an IE clone, the tabs get rid of clutter in your taskbar and the 'F' keys can switch between the tabbed windows, so I'm happy. Go try it for yourself, you might like it.

Both of you need a lesson in image compression.

First, get a good image saving tool - I prefer the GIMP ( do a google ). Another good one would be photoshop.

Second, save it - and set the quality sliders back a bit further until it's small enough. It's a shapshot of your background, not an image for use as a bus-stop poster - a little aliasing won't hurt.

Joshti's pic is ESPECIALLY pitiful. It's mainly black - and it's not hard, well defined colors. That should crunch 500% ( that's not even a slight exaggeration ) better as a JPEG. If you don't know when to use a JPEG over a GIF and vice-versa, then either find a site or a ( *shock* ) book on 'image compression formats', and it'll save you ton's of MB's in the future.

And just to show that I really am right ( and that I'm 'DA SHIZNIT' ;) ), here's Joshti's pic after a crunching in the GIMP. Even at default quality settings, this image saved as 65.5kB - about 1/5th what your image was :eek: :eek:. So whatever you're using either sucks, or you're not using it right ( probably the latter given you used a GIF ).

And just to FULLY convince you ( as if that didn't ), here's my desktop again - in glorious, small monitor sweating 1600x1200x32 glory - AND small enough to attach, I might add....

Yes, I've had a bit of practice through websites ( where every last kB counts hugely ), but it doesn't take long to get the hang of with the GIMP, as there's just slider bars for quality vs size. And at evey step it re-previews the picture ( so you can see the net quality yourself ), as well as tells you the filesize ( so you can tell if it's small enought ). The GIMP is really the ultimate tool - it can compress far better than photoshop, and I would go so far as to say it's saving interface ( unfortunately, not the whole thing ) is more intuitive - definately check it out whether you've got photoshop or not, cos it's FREE!!

The text is MILDLY aliased - EVERY character in that screenshot is perfectly readable. And that's not even the point! It doesn't need to be readable.

Quite frankly, I don't give a flying f*ck what names you've given all your icons. I'm more interested in checking out people background images, icons and general themes ( if they use one - I'm boring and don't ATM ).

Now your image is 300kB, and it has to be linked off the page. I'll bet less than 10 people ever view that image, because:
- They give up half way through the download. Hell, even on DSL I had to wait a while. On 56k I would have just said a few choice words and closed the screen mid-download.
- They're wise, saw your mention of 300kB, and gave up to start off with.
