View Full Version : Setting up a dc hub on LAN

Well the last LAN I had (only like 2 people) I had some problems with my ip. I was hosting the DC server.
What happened was every time someone reset unplugged from the network or something like that my ip changed so every time we wanted to use the hub id have to go to the command prompt and fetch my ip.
It got pretty annoying and I know there is a better way of doing it but not sure how.
I use "obtain ip address automatically" along with everyone else at the LAN.
We also use the workgroup "MSHOME" (don’t ask em why just the first one I used so yeah..)
How can I give my self a static ip but make it so that other people can just use the detect ip automatically function so its pretty much plug and play?
Thanks

what IP range are you on? Fire up cmd and type ipconfig /all , press enter and see what it says
It'll prolly be assigned by your DSL router, usually 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x... but the method (pun?) is still the same
go to your network and dial up settings (look in the control panel.. if you are using XP, switch back to classic view), in there will be a connection called "Local Area Connection" or similar...
right click on that and then click on properties... then find "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and go to the properties of that
Then set your IP manually based to something on the same range...
For example if your router has the address of 192.168.0.1 (it'll show as "default gateway" when you run ipconfig) then give your computer another address on the 192.168.0.x range.. try 192.168.0.10, then use the same subnet mask, point to the router's IP for default gateway and then put in your ISP's DNS servers for primary and secondary DNS
apply/ok your way out.. wait a couple of minutes for windows to sort itself out and you should be set

Ok well at the moment I don’t have a LAN set up but my default gateway is set up as 210.55.167.87 My ip address in Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties is 192.168.1.1 (I have manually set it now but not used it yet it was on automatically detect before and for the last LAN) My subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 My default gateway is blank and my DNS server address is completely blank.
Im on a 56k xtra connection if that changes anything.

yeah that'll be fine.. just make sure that any other computers hooked up to your network are on the 192.168.1.x range, and if you are sharing the internet connection, those computers should have their dns addresses set to the ones you can see there in your ipconfig results

Does that mean they will have to set there ip manually or will it auto detect it with the “obtain an ip address automatically” function checked?
i have a feeling i wont be sharing my connection either lol.

have you got a dhcp server running on your network? from the sounds of it I doubt it... without a dhcp server, they'll have to set their computers up manually if you want the whole thing to run without a hitch

Ok i have no idea what one is. Got a good faq?
And is there a way of making that ip into a series of wors like method.abc.org or whatever like no-ip will?
All i do with the lan is fileshare (DC) and play games

Method..
DHCP:

Also it pays to know that most DSL routers and some operating systems can do DHCP for the LAN..

Im going to have a play around with DHCP.
From what i read it dowsnt sound that hard to hook up and all that everyone else needs to do is have there ip config on automatically detect.
Were can i find one? i downloaded one from here http://www.isc.org/products/DHCP/dhcp-v3.html alltho didnt have a clue to what i was doing. The readme didnt help too much.. im not even sure if it runs on windows lol. Il read it again later on but was wondering if there is a better dhcp client for Windows 2000?
Ok im getting one from vicomsoft http://www.vicomsoft.com/vig/vig.main.html
Theres looks simple to use. will have a play around with it :)
/edit :sorry
Ok did a bit of thinking and noticed I got sidetracked. What I was actually wondering is if I can use a set of words for an ip. Things like No-Ip does it when you’re on the net. I.e. if someone goes into dc while I'm on the net and types method.dynip.com they will get to my hub. (You wont but it’s an example)
Is it possible to do something like this on LAN?
