View Full Version : Thermal probe placement

Never had a PC with one of these temp probe thingys.... CPUs didn't even have heatsinks when I started :D
Nevertheless... I brought a Thermaltake case, and its got a Hardcano 9. Now with the temp probe, where do I stick it? The instructions are a little vauge, and I don't wanna short out my new processor :p (Can probes even short things out? Are they conductive on the outside? It looks as though its 'sort of' insulated, however better safe than sorry.
So is it....
CPU
Probe
Tape
Socket
or
CPU
Tape
Probe
Socket
or even
CPU
Tape
Probe
Tape
Socket
I know it's probably obvious, but CPUs aren't cheap :)

So what you want to do is put the probe INTO the socket?
Is this the probe for the V9 or the TT case display?

By the sounds of it the sensor is for the Hardcano 9? Or have you just got the Harcano and the Volcano confused?
If you want to use it on the cpu, don't put the probe directly on top of the core, but beside it or by the looks of the V9 diagrams, it can also work underneath.

It's the sensor for the Hardcano. Heres a link:
http://www.thermaltake.com/products/hdcooler/hardcano9.htm
The diagram that came with it shows the sensor under the cpu, and then the wires thread out through the cpus pins. That's all good, I've no problem sticking things under the cpu :)
I just wanna know if the tape that sticks it to the cpu is also used to insulate it, ie to stop it from shorting out any circuits that may be on the underside of the cpu.

Found this on the Thermaltake website
http://www.thermaltake.com/support/installations/installhardCano2.htm
These pictures look the masters for the crappy black and white ones in the manual. See how the tape looks double sided? Buggered if I can get the backing off though... If it wasn't for this picture, I'd swear that the tape isn't....
From this picture, it looks like the tape goes on the cpu, then the sensor sticks to that (must be double sided tape). If the supplied tape doesn't play ball, I'll find some somewhere :D
Anyway... whats the consensus? CPU, TAPE, SENSOR, SOCKET in that order?

Someone? Anyone? My Northwood C arrives tomorrow

ok you can put it under the cpu and thread it thru the pins. For a better reading place it beside your core. Have it lying flat sidways touching the side of the core. You might need to snip off the excess plastic abit and use some thermal epoxy to hold it there and condict heat to it better, That would give you the best reading alltho under the cpu is fine.
I use the beside core method.
screw getting a hardcano ;) the only decent things on them is the lcds! Just get a monitor which tells you cpu and hdd temps, btw malcom :) its doom, (alex) i met you at flash one day (a few holidays back) (i showed you recoil and some other stuff)

Actually doom that is intirely wrong! a monitor programs readings can some times be as much as 10 degrees off what they actualy are. The probe gives more accurate readings. Why do you think that soooo many people have spent the cash to get a probe?
And in answer to the orginal question, on the thermaltakes site it says they are insulated. I would just wack it under the CPU alittle hard to get to the core on a P4 with that heat spreader :p

Hey Alex, long time no see! How are they stealth drives working? :)
I didn't specifically set out to buy the Hardcano, it just came with my case ;)
Thanks for the advice casemodder, I'll give it a go tonight.
