I got my old laptop working, after about 3 years of being broken, small problem though, I want to get some stuff off it, but the a:\ is busted.
Also it doesn't have a network port, so i'd have to use the parrall port, only i don't have direct connect installed (a windows 95 component). i doesn't have a cdrom either. any advice ?

look on the net for a program called fastlynx - it is a simple, dos based networking program that can use parallel or serial ports to network...
other than that, you'll have to borrow a pcmcia network adapter off someone and go from there.

Use Fastlynx, available here (http://www.sewelld.com/) and you can use a serial port, or parallel port and a null modem (serial cable) or parallel cable.
When I last use the program, you only need it initially installed on one computer, and it had instructions to configure a serial port on another computer with out it installed to upload it. I use to use it with Win95.
It's less than 1MB to download it.

did i mention it doesn't have a modem ?
I do have a 33kbps pc card modem, but I think it has to be installed (with a floppy) to work.
any way, I don't have internet access at home.
know any1 who goes to lan's, lives in auckland, and has one of those pc card network things ?

hmm. well I just tried to edit my reply, but it wouldn't let me ?
anyway I read your message more completely and noticed this part
you only need it initially installed on one computer, and it had instructions to configure a serial port on another computer with out it installed to upload it.
Thankyou muchly , I'll get one of my friends to download it and put it on a floppy for me. hope fully now i'll be able to link my new pc with the laptop.:D

I've gotten the program, and have read all the help files that came with it, but they don't explain (apart from briefly metioning) how you install fastlynx over the cable to the other computer... could some1 post a walkthrough, or google a search for me ?

its on the fx main menu from memory, you need to type some commands at the dos prompt of the PC you want to install it to.

FX tells you what to do when you select whatever the option is on the main menu...
