It's a game of two halves
By INQwell staff, 26/06/2002 10:45:59 BST

OUR FRIENDS at c't magazine have a battle going on at their website right now.
The site has a dual Athlon 2GHz machine playing 55 matches of chess against a dual Xeon 2.4GHz box.

And readers can watch as Sanders and Grove originated boxes sweat it out over the Internet.

Of course, chess benchmarks tend to favour CPUs with the best branch prediction units. And we believe that the Athlon MP has a better set of these than the Intel boxes.

Nevertheless, we can hope for some unexpected action because "fuzzy logic" may intervene and upset the microprocessor applecart.

You can find the action here. µ

Well - i think that was a win to the AMD.

Though they do nothing for ages, then tons happens in a blink or two, so it's kinda hard to tell ( cos the next game then starts immediately ) ....

...wish I was that good.... :D

well, guess its time to throw out all the soccer world cup trash, time to get behind AMD, w00ts, go amd!!

I wonder what the scores would be like with the old durons/pentium 1 /2 /3's, celerons etc.

would be interesting to se the scores

I have emailed them about that, to see if they could do the same with Celeron vs Duron and P4 vs XP.

16 vs 14, this is a big come back by Intel.

I could be wrong, but it not only looks like a match between amd and intel, it also looks like a match between fritz and shredder, both of which I assume to be chess playing applications.

The game I looked at this morning, and just before had the amd and intel boxes both using a different application. So any advantage may also be because of one chess playing application being beter than the other.

On the site they have a matrix which once populated will be able to show us not only which is "better" between amd vs intel, but also between fritz vs shredder, and the best combination of cpu + software.

17-16 with 15 draws, they don't come any closer than this.

I don't think much of their software.

In game 51 black had a move for mate and didn't play it allowing white to move out of it.. 3 moves later and white promptly moved allowing black to play for mate. again it didn't take the move.

Software just seems to be playing for points rather that any kind of strategy I can see.

yeah well, it is chess... and computers typically just suck at chess :)

Actually Tiggerz, I thought I was the only one who could see better moves!! During the whole game? Now I'm good at chess, but not great, and I thought I could beat these guys, but then thought I must be missing something.

I have a old chess computer, (15 years old) and I recon it could beat these PC hands down.

Didn't the 'Big Blue' (a supercomputer) just beat the worlds grand master about 6-12 months ago for the first time?

well yeah, but one (BIG) computer in however million there are out there hardly counts as "typical" ;)

Not typical, but maybe the start of a new era.

24-21 to AMD, still close enoguh for it not to be significant, so I'll just go out on a limb and annoy fanboys on both sides..."There is no real performance difference overall between the two" :p

That would be a pro-AMD statement, then?

2.4GHz Xeon's vs ( cheaper and slower ) 2GHz MP's.....

;) ;) :p

Intel has opened up a can of whoop-@$$.

Intel leads Round two: 11 wins, 5 losses, 19 draws.

Yea, I think there is two different chess playing applications, as mentioned earlier. So its unfair to compare say amd using chess application 1 vs intel using chess application 2. I'll ask my manager (who is fluent in german) to help translate it on Monday.

they are pitching all possible combinations.
For example:

AMD Fritz vs. Intel Fritz
AMD Fritz vs. Intel Shredder
AMD Shredder vs. Intel Fritz
AMD Shredder vs. Intel Shredder
