Hi All,

I am trying to set up my DSL 500 router to allow voice, video, file transfers etc through MSN. At present I have my computer in the DMZ which isn't really secure.

The ports that I need to open are UDP: 5004 - 65535. TCP: 1503, 6891 - 6900, 3398. The problem is there dosen't seem to be a way to add ranges of ports to the Port Redirection table in the routers config.

Does anyone have any experience with these routers and know how to open ranges of ports.

I have a bad feeling I might need new firmware :( I think the version mine has does not support UPnP.

i used to own one of these routers, and i feel your pain.

the port fowarding interface is arse.

disco bought it off me, he might have figured it out by now...

Trying to pinhole 113, have done 21 before, but can't remember what. :p

www.dice.orcon.net.nz/pinholes.JPG

Gives me the error
NAT Port Group Mapping: Command Fail

I now I don't need the 112 there, but can't be bothered updating the screenshot. :p

It's an ASUS. :)

They generally don't want people opening up entire port ranges as it's not the safest thing to do.

Not too sure on that sorry.

got the same router, AFAIK you can't do it i'm afraid :(

[OT slightly] is it safe to flash a New Zealand DSL500 with the standard firmware? i've been having disconnect problems (physical line error it reports - telecom can't seem to fix it) and wanted to try new firmware but wasn't sure if it would work in NZ... and there appears to be no way of backing up the original one.

Stick with the NZ ones.

US uses different protocols etc so it wouldn't be the best thing to try.

don't you mean NZ "one" tho? :p

doesn't seem to be any firmware updates for NZ at all, or at least i havent been able to find any. :(

hadn't checked the firmware in awhile, looks a bit different now :p

Theres a couple there that are apparently NZ suitable.

Btw - I'm still using R2.02.b2t8nz and haven't had any probs with it.

Found this link in my search http://shadow.sentry.org/~trev/dsl50x.html

It looks like they have added upnp in a later firmware. It seems that that is nessecary to let MSN work with the router afaik. I'll try the latest one at some stage.

I flashed my router to the latest bios (2.21 from 2.02) and it has a updated webinterface and a whole heap of extra features like allowing ranges of ports (HORRAY!)

Unfortunately it caused my router to randomly lockup (didnt respond to pings/http/telnet requests) and I had to pull the power on it to reboot it, so I'm running 2.02 again :(

The bios and stuff can be found at http://www.dlink.co.nz/tech/drivers/files/routers/dsl500.htm

Control_Phreak, what version is your DSL500? (it's on the sticker underneath the router)

i might give the new firmware a go myself but mines version C2 and if yours is the same version it's probably not worth bothering.

mashy have you tried it yet? also what version do you have?

It says C2 on the bottom and its Generation I

It's worth a shot at the latest bios. D-Link told me they'd had no issues with the latest bios so maybe its just me *shakes fist in air*
