an article from inq..

LAST YEAR we mentioned here that future generations of 3D accelerators will need higher precision colour than 32-bit. We were also pleased to see John Carmack creator of all Dooms and Quakes agree with us and ask for the same thing for the upcoming title Doom 3.
We have now learned that ATI's Radeon 10,000 will be first chip on the market to implement 128-bit colour precision.

ATI did a famous press release in 'god we are good' style claiming Carmak had said how good the R300 is and we all know that Carmak wanted extra colour depth to be able to have its all manner of fancy effects in Doom 3.

According to our sources, the 128-bit implementation will make multitexturing applications look better and you will be able to have 32-bits per colour. This is amazing since it enables you to have 16.7 milion combnations per colour. In current 32-bit color you just have 8 pixels per colour, giving just 256 variations of colors.

128-bit precision should be part of the DX 9 specification and if you want your hardware to be DX 9 compatible you need to have this precision inside. This leads us to the conclusion that Nvidia NV30 will also have support for 128-bit floating point precision.

128-bit floating point colour will bring more cinematic reality in effects used in games and everything will look lovely, we're told. ?

yea..i'm an ATi wh0r3.. now bring it on NV30 !!!

@ the very least the top one is a hoax.
Tis been proven, unless they are using some uber powerful unreleased cpu ;)
Have a read thru the madonion forums here (http://discuss.madonion.com/forum/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=techdisplayadapters&Number=906641&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=1&vc=1) & here.... I'm looking forward to the upcoming R300 Vs NV30 battles tho :D

Geez - pick the hoax

And next, NEXT gen card with working silicon, WORKING DRIVERS, and GOING UNDER IT'S RETAIL NAME?

C'mon Paul - you should be able to spot BS when you see it....

LOL - just noticed. It apparently uses non-existant QDR RAM, AND he benched in Win9x using 32-bit color, AND.... ah, forget it, just realise it's a hoax and be done with it...

Worst comes to worst you can allways check MadOnion for that bench

apparently it hasnt been proven to be false or true yet

just a bunch of nerds answering on those forums and they think they know wats best

well all see what happens when these cards do come ouut...

but then again, i may be wrong :D

yeah - over 27,000 3dMarks does seem a little unbelievable.

Last time I checked they mentioned around 10,000 below that at 1024x768 ;)

btw - here's some slighty more believable r300 info:

The highest published 2001 bench is like about 16,000+ which from memory was on a 3+Gig P4 and a highly OCed GF 4 4600...... cool only about 6,000 more 3d marks and I'll be top of the world :p

nobody knows.. wether its a hoax or not. and there has been some evidence that ATi's trying to implement another MAXX solution for their nex-gen (r300) cards in some of beta drivers. also, for a card that they claim to be a revolutionary one, I would definitly expect a performance around that score shown.
rage MAXX doubled its fill-rate by rendering each frame by each chipset. and it did somehow match the performance of GF DDR under some cases. with not much of slow down in high res. and if its the case with new R300 card. then the score certainly looks viable. but as i said earler, who knows?

well, its pretty obvious that this is a fake, however IMHO i think the r300 will be capable of pulling that kinda scores when hooked up with the right processor. Say, i reckon a R300 with a barton would prob produce those kinda scores.
I say this coz a r300 is quite a leap from a GF4 ti4600, which OCed, and paired with a 3.1ghz p4 gets 16k. This is all considering that a r300 is a next-gen card, so we should expect the kind of leap from the Gf3's to the GF4's. What do u think is the highest scores on a ti500?

*Sniff* *Sniff* I smell BS.

All this fanboy crap never stops. It happens with every single rumour that gets started, everyone expecting the next biggest thing "Card 'X' is gonna topple company 'Y' because its great!".
And then expectations always come crashing back to reality when the card hits the shelves.

Im not digging on you Paul, its just people really need to think about this stuff before proclaiming it to be the next coming of graphical Jesus.

There's a graphical Jesus!?!?!?!?!........... jesus

good point harls. but if anticipation and hype means nothing but some fanboyish crap, whats the point of this whole what-so-called-tech-sites? computer technology keeps on developing. I don't really care if ATi beats its archenemy nVidia down and employ Jen-Hsun Huang as a toilet cleaner. i'm excited because we will see an improvement over current gen hardware. and no.. i don't think it will be a graphical jesus.. after all, its just another new vid card.. like what GTS.. GF3.. GF4 has been. but at least it has couple of new features that will keep us geeks hang on for a while to master the technology behind it... and its been like this for countless times since the beginning of tech sites right? i dunno about you.. but for me, new technology is always an exciting bit of information, and especialy for a new Vid card that JC used for showcase of his greatest piece of code, i thought it deserves a little thread space. or was it just too much?

heck.. i still remember "how do you do your hair?" thread in old forum..

I'm not a fanboy, but I'm looking forward to it.

I think it is exciting as the next gen are looking to move away from focusing on performance alone, and are looking to combine performance with extreme eye candy.

I notice you 'It could be true' posters have ALL completely ignored my QDR remark.... what, too [H]ard to face reality...

True Paul, true...
I guess we all get excited about new stuff thats rumoured to be in the works, otherwise we probably wouldnt be here at OCNZ would we.
Im not an Nvidia fanboy (tho I own a Ti4400), heck if ATI did release this demon onto the world I'd be the first inline at the hospital to sell a kidney for it.
Its just that there have been so many fake rumours and stuff out there, (and 3dmark I dont think is really the best gauge of a cards performance anyway), that its hard to keep getting excited about every little thing that pops up on the net.
Meh.

Hey, maybe bitboys sold their card design to ATI and its going to revolutionize the way we play games:p :D
