I got a feeling my Nforce chipset ide controler is letting me down on performance, has anyone had this problem?
Does anyone know of a good cheep and maybe even second hand raid or non raid pci ide controler???

I don't use an Nforce mobo, but try downloading HDTach and see what your results are: http://www.tcdlabs.com/htach261.exe
Have you checked for newer drivers on the mobo manufacturers site?

pc feels like 486 while writing cd's
not very good.
and it only writes at 10 speed, 24 speed no good:(
flexi write saves cd's though but it takes ages to write them, interesting.
thanx for the links, i have installed the drivers already
i'll just wait for a fix i guess.
thanx for the help :)

I had the MSI board and had no problems with IDE speeds at all, all benchmarks were reasonable for the drives I had.
ensure your using the correct cables for your drives ie 40pin/80pin and that the drive settings are correct for master/slave/cable select etc.
Also make sure that the drives are operating in the correct UDMA or PIO mode as appropriate
Raid PCI controllers can be picked up from DSE for around $90 iirc, they use the Highpoint 370 chip and seem to work ok.

then if things still only burn at 10x try changing the media you use (eg change the brand of blanks you use)
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnndddddddd failing that try upgrade the firmware on your burner

nforcesys2k3f.exe was downloaded and installed an hour before i first posted, thankyou whetu, you are quick and vey helpful
i did check the dma modes too, an hour before i posted here they were as you have given an example
cables i will replace yes but my own benchmarks show 45-55MB per sec read burst speads and 20 - 45 MB per sec sequential speed tests on three different 40 GB drives
the cd writer was bought monday, asus crw 2410A the only reason i am seeking a solution is because its no faster than my old 10 speed that died
i have five ide devices anyway, i need expantion:)

Okay so what hard drives do you have, what rpm speed are your hard drives.. eg: are they 5400rpm or 7200rpm...? what bandwidth class eg: ata 66, ata 100 ..?
Also how do you have them setup
Primary Master = ?
Primary Slave = ?
Secondary Master = ?
Secondary Slave = ?
It usually best to have the data you're burning on a Hard drive on the primary master and the CD Writer on the Secondary master.
