Firstly we need some more information that you have supplied.

1) Are you on a dedicated connection or dialup
2) What OS do you want to run an ftp server from
3) If you're on a dedicated connection, what modem/router are you using to connect to the internet.

Those bits of info would be right handy ol chap :D

okay, first of all you'll need to grab yourself an ftp server program...

http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=free+ftp+server&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en

whichever takes your fancy first really.. I'm using Serv-U (www.serv-u.com)

Then setting it up depends on which software you get... you'll want to setup an account, disable anonymous logins, and set default download/upload directories... anything beyond that is pretty much dependant on which software you get...

Then you can setup a dynamic DNS service like no-ip to make it easier, or you can simply tell your mates to upload to ftp://youripaddress eg ftp://203.114.157.42

but that has the problem of having to find out your ip address, and updating your friends accordingly; "my ip has changed to...".. whereas with a dynamic dns address you just give them the one address and voila.. they just upload to ftp://code187.no-ip.org for example... and IP changes should be transparent to them..
