This is the day I dreaded from the start , the day my ISP (snap) says they are going to put a cap on Jetstart.

I know I sound like I am whining but thats why I chose ADSL, the increase in speed (which is crap) and its unlimited usage. All the hardware gone to waste!

Just like to check with some of you guys, Neuron.net.nz are they any good? And no, I am not going to ask anyone about Net4U.

What size cap are they putting on? ... only for international traffic or for both international and national traffic...?

If it's like 10gb and only on International traffic (ie: if you've still got unlimited local traffic) that's pretty standard and not too bad.. otherwise yeah I would consider changing.

I'm gathering you're talking about Snap. I got that email as well today.

ADSL JETSTART:

Until now we have been offering unlimited data usage on our Jetstart
service. The price for this service is far lower than the actual cost to
us to provide it, nevertheless, we continued to offer it as long as
possible.

Unfortunately as other ISPs have stopped offering flatrate Jetstart a
large number of their heaviest users have recently switched to us
leading to a very small percentage of our customers using a large
percentage of our bandwidth, significantly increasing our costs and
impairing performance for everyone and therefore forcing us to follow
suit.

For this reason we are replacing our current Jetstart plan with two
separate options:

Flatrate Jetstart:

For $35 per four weeks you can use unlimited national traffic and up to
4GB of international traffic between 8 AM and 1 AM. Traffic used between
1 AM and 8 AM will not count towards the traffic cap. If you transfer
more than 4GB of data over the previous 28 days during the hours of 8 AM
and 1 AM we may rate shape your connection to slower speeds.

The big advantages of this plan are that it is not possible to run up a
bill for extra usage if you download extensively and it is possible by
just setting up a scheduler for heavy downloading to transfer well over
20 GB of data without it affecting your connection which is more than
two to four times as much traffic as you can use on most other ISPs.

As it is not possible to incur extra charges on this plan and most
people use far less traffic than this, this will become the default
plan. If you would prefer to change to the plan below please contact us.

Premium Jetstart:

For $35 per four weeks you can use unlimited national traffic and up to
10 GB of international data traffic additional data usage is billed at
$0.10 per MB.

The big advantage of this plan is we will not rate shape the connection
to slower speeds if the account is used heavily but heavy usage can
incur additional charges.

To find out your current bandwidth usage just log into our account info
section on the right hand side of our homepage at: www.snap.net.nz and
click on Online Time then select the starting date of the billing period
you want to check.

yes its snap, gave some feedback.

If we could have a roll over period, if we dont use up the 10gb the remainder can be rolled over to the next month, BUT ONLY THE NEXT MONTH (i must emphasise), if we could roll over month after month after month that would be sweet, but it wont be practical so the remainder only lasts for the following month.

its not too bad really

i know its not too bad, but when I first went on jetstart I got it because of the unlimited and always on features of ADSL. There were alot more ISP without a cap when I first joined.

Who is controlling the price of internet (bandwidth) at the moment? Telecom, the government?

Quick answer - NO

Long answer - they dicked us around something chronic, didnt reply to emails, have no 0800 contact number, then they had the cheek to suspend our account when our bill was only one day over due and we hadnt been able to use the service for two weeks because of the whole telecom drama.

My advice, avoid neuron like the plague, unless you like wasting money and time.....

if you're thinking of changing ISPs to avoid the cap just forget about.

[bold statement] i have no doubt in my mind there will be ZERO uncapped ISPs left in NZ by the end of the year [/bold statement]

it sucks, but it's just another price you pay for living in such a lovely country ;)

I'm just left wondering... where's the competition? Will Telescum up their jetstart to 256 to combat Saturn? Probably not, I expect the reply to be. I understand the whole international traffic thing a little better now, but surely their should be some competition at some level  I would like to see at least 512 or higher with 10G cap, but maybe I'm just pissing in the wind.... :(
I barely even break 3G's most times because it takes days to download anything decent and I don't even bother with anything over 150 megs anymore because by that time the d/l screws up or is corrupt and I've wasted all that bandwidth.

Well said mird. Sadly Iblis I doubt that there will be any real competition any time soon - TelstraClear haven't got a big enough network to be a real threat.

By my crude calculations it would take over a week of non-stop, full-speed international traffic to blow 10 gig. If you are putting that sort of load on your ISP for some selfish reason, then go for the unlimited plan. At least Snap are giving you the choice.

they're gonna turn the interleave off?!?!?!?!?

YEAH RIGHT

to do that telecom would have to let all the isp's do it, otherwise its unfair busness practices.......

thats said, i'd love it inf tc would turn it off

Yeah - anyone with half a brain saw this coming a looonnngggg time ago.

Unlmited Jetstart means up to 40GB each way of traffic per month - and at standard rates of around $25-$35 per month, that just is not feasible if a significant chunk of it is international data usage.

....so it's hardly rocket science coming to same conclusion that many of us already have.

Reality check extremerigman: get used to it. Life sucks and then you die ( or something, hehe ).

InSPire still offer 10GB international and unlimited national @ $35/month. Same as they always have ( though I'd be quite happy if they trimmed that to 5GB international - I never use more than about 2-3GB ). They offered that a year ago, they offer it now - and they'll probably still be offering it some time into the future.

The problem with ISPs pulling caps on now isn't "Lamz0r ISP Cap my leechy-goodness, waaaa!", the problem is "I'm a n00b and have NFI how to properly monitor bandwidth". You're a moron if you think that somehow businesses are going to keep selling you something at a loss forever - they're there to make money, not lose it.

If you really want to keep your internet costs low, use NZ P2P - there are MANY, MANY NZ-only hubs and P2P communities around - and I seriously doubt there will be many Linux ISO's that you want that can't be found off someone in NZ's machine. Furthermore, go to a LAN or two. L3 may be $20 - almost a month's worth of internet access, but I'm aware of people uploading over 1TB of data, and downloading over 200GB of data in a single LAN - so if you want good GB/$, LANs ( NCGN - anything, they all represent very good value for money even on a purely data/cost front ) represent a good alternative.

Failing that - move to the US.

can ya tell I'm sick of people b1tching about caps?

dsl isn’t as insanely slow as it seems, it actually real fast. when the interleave is turned on, the packet transmission rate slows down so that the modem/dslam can run error checking on the packets, and so the line is less prone to noise..... this means it can work on much poorer lines, the downside is increased processing and latency.
its not a bad thing, but if you have good lines your suffering for no reason, its just another example of TC halfassedly offering a service......

ya know how you see players with 5-10 ping? that’s TC's employees, who've switched the interleave off

extremerigman

interleave....is there a way we can turn it off?

tc employees don't have to worry about interleave.
TCNZ won't change its (r)adsl service levels due to the telecommunications commissioners report on the unbundling due out...

if they give an inch now they will be forced to give the whole damned shooting box away... oh.. and we want that by the way.
