View Full Version : Initial costs for Jetstart?
Grrr!!
05-05-2003, 08:13 PM
My flatmates and I are starting to really hate 56k.
Therefore, we are looking into getting jetstart. We are happily willing to pay the ~$70 per month, but what are the initial costs?
What I have discovered so far:
ADSL Modem: ~$250
DSL installation: $99
Line filter: $20
Switch and Networking: ~$75
Do I have everything there, is there anything else that needs to be paid in advance? $450 seems a lot of money for faster internet.

its an initial setup cost... Every so often on tardme you can get something decent for 100-150 bucks.. like a stingray or something... Throw together a smoothwall box and bobs yer uncle.
line filters are $20 per phone.. if you have 3 phones, thats $60...
try waiting a bit longer.. telecom is always running specials for free installation every couple of months or so...
I think that's about it

Telecom have deals every few months where they don't charge the $99 connection fee..I got my jetstart last month and the connection fee was only $ 45..not sure what the deal is at the mo

Me:
Dynalink Router of Tardme for $200
Firewall $free
Installation $free
Filter one $free with router, and other phone is hardly used, who cares.
First month $free with Inspire
All up $200.

OMG we had a few troubles with our installation, firstly we decided to go with Paradise so sweet as there, well kinda, and then when we got our installation, which you can actually do yourself, its not that hard, if you want just ask and we could post some photos for ya, you just need the technician to go out to the main box and "switch you on".
So we get our first bill and holy hell if its not any less than ~$340. What had happened was that telecom, when we ordered jetstart had added in a second ISP and had been charging us. About 5 calls later they had removed all that crapand we are only just back to "normal".
Not the best experiences really.

me:
Nokia M1122 - Free (no I wont tell you how ;))
Nokia Splitter - Free (comes with the router)
Installation - Free (Dad's a phoneguy remember)
Firewall - Free (w00t for smoothwall!)
So we only paid ISP hookup fees and a months connection fee.. $65 bucks or so...
Better than $450 you gotta admit ;)
Me:
-asus AAM6000EV :$300 and something (it was a long time ago)
-8 port 10/100 switch :$120ish
-Instalation :FREE
-ISP :$25
-2 * filters :$40

damn good effort ss.... it had to be said.. :D
ok, vaguely back on topic, but the only other expense i can think of is that some isps have hook on charges as well (if you're going to change) and some also like to be paid a couple of months in advance.
when i got it all hooked up, i changed to world net, and they had a connection charge which was wiped if you paid about 3 months in advance, so i'd look into that as a possible setup cost too.
Alcatel Speedtouch USBs are only $100 at DSE in their priced to clear section.

in a flat situation with a number of computers, i think that a dsl router would be the better option, hence the $250 estimate.
wasn't there a link recently for a cheap dsl router which had a 802.11b access point?
meh, can't find linkage....

Jetstart Gear:
ADSL ROUTER: approx $300 (depends on the ADSL modem/switch combo you decide on)
LINE FILTER: approx $20 per phone jack
ADSL INSTALLATION: $99 (try to wait for special)
ONE OFF ACCOUNT SETUP FEE: approx $15-20 (check with ISP about this fee because i refused to pay it because i never saw it during the web based sign up form :p )
MONTHLY JETSTART FEE: $30
ISP CHARGE: $30 (depending on ISP you go with)
Networking Gear:
NETWORK CARDS: ? (per computer connected to adsl)
NETWORK CABLES: ? (per computer connected to adsl)
FIREWALL BOX: ?
Trust me, that first months bill is always a b**** when you recieve it!

haha
I got my modem a few years ago and it went more like this:
M1122 Modem/router : $530 (wholesale!! Bargain!!)
Connection Fee: $99
Install Fee (much better than filters): $80
Joining the ISP: Free! Cos I looked for one that was.
JetStart + ISP: around $60 a month I think
Having high speed internet before most peeps and (at the time) the most 1337 ADSL modem money could buy?: Priceless...
Still my latest install cost zip, as Telecom did a free connection and the house I moved to already had a filter (just had to wire a jack to where I wanted it...and after the last install they left a reel of cable and I had a jack already...)
Wait for a special, that's the best way.. that $99 connection fee is a big price to pay for a tech to patch a twisted pair to a box in the exchange...
Oh and you still need a line (but of course you can share it with your phones)

Got a Alcatel Speed Touch Pro for $200
a few line filters for $40
and the $29.95 to telescum per month
and $30 for paradise a month.

all this dsl talks makin me sad and kinda annoyed.. flatmates wanned to move to a warmer "nicer" place, and indeed it is nicer - even comes with a pool :p
however the day we tried to switch our previous jetstart connection to the new place telecom rings us up and tells us that we cant have dsl at the new place presumably as the lines arent copper or the exchange is too old and yuky
gah and we only moved a coupla streets away from the old place.
the real annoying thing is that now we are just out of range for WW aswell. gah.
dial up with 3 ppl.. mucho slowness.. telecom said that they might put a copper line down for us but i highly doubt that will ever happen.
only thing to do is hope and pray
/rant mode off

Turbocomm works in our home network. Sharing Internet access with no problems. It's cheap but the server needs to be up for other PC to get internet.
Router is MUCH better for more P.C
