Aiighht everyone.
We are going to have your status's set, ie: not user customizable.
We are doing this since we removed the post count, it will be easier to identify someones post count/usage of the forums without visiting their profile.
Also, to differentiate mods from normal users.
So, without further ado, i ask you all to come up with ideas for status names for the following layout:
0-10
11-50
51-100
101-200
201-300
301-500
501-1000
1001-2000
2001-5000
For example:
0-10 | Be gentle
11-50 | Is that a fan?
51-100 | I have a heatsink!
101-200 | 7k Delta cooled
201-300 | Alpha w/ 8k Delta
301-500 | Water cooled
501-1000 | Peltier & wet
1001-2000 | Liquid Nitrogen
2001-5000 | Liquid Helium
I'm sure you can figure it out :D
We look forward to your contributions :)
Grrr!!

you could always do it like the old forums where at 400 posts you got a custom avatar?

without postcount, what else is there to use to quickreference a member's history here hmmmmmm? this is an especially important point to note when it comes to buy/sell. personally I'd rather not have to view several profiles while looking for deals.

anyways, custom statuses will only be available to those who earn the position, mods and admins. People who have "earnt the position" will be long time members such as mird-oc for example.
If it really is THAT important to you, at least it will be initiative for you to put a bit more into the community... think of it as a long term goal... if you have now decided it wasnt THAT important anyway, than dont worry about it.
its awfully simple in theory...

Ok technically, but you know what phase change I am talking.
You know technically a heatsink and heat spreader is a peltier, it's just commercial peltiers use metals that have a large temp differential across their junctions.
Any way, I think the cooling thing is boring too. (he I'm alowed to change my mind)

i agree that if you need a track on how many posts you've done.. there should be a post count.
Any comments thats are 'default member status' will not accurately reflect the status of a member. ie Status = "166MHz running at 201MHz" for a 1-10 poster is perhaps even demeaning when the user has actually run at 25Ghz using iced scotch and water and has been overclocking since Babbage.
The comments should reflect the post count and not the supposed experience or knowledge of a poster.
footnote: I have never run a CPU on scotch and water.

ie:
1-10
10-50
etc
mird-OC
25-06-2002, 08:56 PM
we're thinking on the same wavelength Ripping.
the member status is just another representation of postcount. it is directly linked to a member's postcount.
if the powers that be are so opposed to the postcount then why do they want a member status? well of course because it's good to have some sort of indication of a member's contribution. a postcount is a good idea but of course there will be no postcount because it encourages spam (or something). so instead we need a member status which is based directly on a member's postcount. so why not just put the postcount back on? oh, wait, of course, there can be no postcount. yes, instead we will have a member status based entirely on a member's postcount. well we could just put the postcount back on - oh wait, there will be no postcount. so we'll have a member status that is based entirely on a member's postcount.
:rolleyes:
there seems to be some circular logic in my arguement... it could go on forever like this. yes, forever. that would be an enternity. to the end of days. until the end of time.
so umm, a member status you say... how about this:
POST MILESTONES
0-50 - n00bie
51-100 - 50 posts
101-200 - 100 posts
201-300 - 200 posts

1001-2000 - 2000 posts
2001-5000 - 5000 posts

either way you have it, be it postcount or member status... it changes nothing. i really don't care either way, i just don't understand why we shouldn't just adopt the easiest possible solution.

If you have been here for any length of time you will know the people who are high posters anyway, I think if KJ was selling something here at good price and people were interested then it would be snapped up quick cuz of the reputation KJ has. Even with custom member status everyone who has been a ocnz member for a while will know who are a big part of the ocnz community.
Having a member status which is related to your postcount will encourage spamming just like having a postcount there.

Stop using logic. Logic does not apply directly. There is no post count and nothing you say will ever change that. NOTHING. NADA. ZERO. ZAP. Capische?
The fact that status is directly related to post-count is in a strange way irrelevant. You see, a precise number has a much different psychological effect that a general status.
Remember how many 'I have 666 posts' or 'I have 1337 posts' or 'I have 4000 posts' ( :rolleyes: :p ) threads there were in the old forums? Well that's entirely typical of forums with post counts visible. People compare their post counts down to the wire - do YOU remember all those 'haha - now I have 5 more posts that you' posts? I do ( unfortunately ).
NOW, in forums with status', you don't see that. Well, at least not as often. Post count may only be one click away - but people are inherantly lazy, and don't use that one click as often they glance to the left. Gone are comparisons between people with 5 posts difference. Gone are the 'ooo - cool posts number' discussions. Some 'I'm a senior member' style posts are likely to still occur - but their incidence will be much lower.
And besides, what's to stop us doing this just to make everyone give up and completely forget post-count ( once again due to their inherant laziness ;) ):
0-48 - n00bie
49-83 - 50 posts
84-171 - 100 posts
172-342 - 200 posts
343-603 - 300 posts

yup well said KJ. i agree with mird in that member status' do create an incentive to spam, but with a status there's much less of it. postcount should stay gone and i think the status thing is a good idea. just please dont make them too cheezy....
i mean n00b still is derogitory in many ways and is kinda cliche'd now days. imho, something like;
0-50 - new member
51-100 - regular
101-200 - senior member
etc... is both effecive, indicative of their contribution to the forum (not their overclocking experience) and not cheezy.
when you get to 500+ start making them fun ;)
eg 5000+ - teh KJ :D

I have to say I'm a bit confused by all of this as well.
You can view the postcount of any member by clicking on their profile, and even view all posts by that member. This will give you an indication of when their latest posts were, etc. You can do all this, yet it has been decided that postcount won't be displayed on the message thread itself. I don't see the point, as in, if you can see it another way, why bother hiding it somewhere else? I suppose you could argue that most people don't bother viewing the profiles unless they are genuinly interested. But then again, if they are a stupid itiot that belives greater post count = superiourity, then perhaps they will always just view everyones profiles to get the post count. Ie, the people that still want to see it, will see it.
With having set "member status" descriptions for set ranges, I am also confused. I"m confused because it was stated that this would help say newcommers in the buy/sell/trade forum easily pick out who is "trustworthy" or has "been around for a while" or who hasn't. I don't see how an arangement such as below would help soemone judge this:
0 - 9: shoehorn
10 - 49: unicorn
50 - 99: bill gates
100 - 199: toaster
Okay, so maybe I wasn't fair, lets be a little better and try and make it so they are all part of the same thing or theme and that it increases with each step:
0 - 9: trial employee
10 - 49: trainee
50 - 99: assistiant
100 -199: supervisor
200 - 299: manager
and so on. Even now its still hard to judge --without first knowing the list-- where someone stands in the order of things. If someone were honestly here on their first visit to the forums, would they know this list?? Nope they wouldn't, so "assistiant" would have no meaning to them. Now the only way for this to make sence, is if we have a scheme like below:
0 - 9: 0-10 posts / < 10 posts
10 - 49: 11-49 posts / < 50 posts
50 - 99: 50-99 posts / < 100 posts
etc.
But, even that is all blown out of the water if some select people are allowed to have their own custom "member status". As, this would not be kept with the "theme", and would once again confuse the poor person in buy/sell/swap, which it was suggested that it would help. It would only really work if everyone had to stick to it.
It could be stated that we already have custom sigs, avatars and such, and well, that we're just getting a little too demanding. But I don't see the reasoning behind changing it. If the reasoning is just "well they've got so much stuff, other forums don't do this, lets revoke something so we don't look so free giving", then whats the point of that? Sorry, but I didn't actually see a good reason, especially if there are expections given to "select" people. Its heaps harder to take "privilidges/rights" away from people, then to never offer it to them in the first place. As if it were never offered, hardly anyone (in comparism) would probably complain or make a fuss over it.
After saying all of this, I honestly really don't care what happens, as I dont' even have a custom avatar yet, but I'm just a little confused by the whole thing.

Well, yes we do, but you must remember that whetu is the ub3r m0d3rat0r - whatever he says goes pretty much. In summation: our opinions don't really count for jack ****, which is fine by me because I don't really care as long as I can customise my Avatar and member status. Member, Senior Member, etc sounds a bit boring and plain, IMHO - we have to have something that sets us apart from every other forum out there........ :D

That and the fact that just about EVERY forum does status' like that.... ;)
However, your point about the names needing to be relevant enough to get an instant appraisal of how much time a person has spent here is entirely valid.
So be creative and think up a creative way of doing that...

just for the record he aint the only one, there are three of us ;)
and the other solution of course is that we can either leave them customisable or remove them.
I believe the argument over "we need post counts and status so people can tell in the buy sell thread" is a load of crap, you can be the first poster on the block and be the most reputable bloke around this isnt tradme you advertise and buy at YOUR own risk and we are in no means liable so therfore its just a case of buyer beware thats all do your homework etc etc never actaully hand over the cash till you know exactly who your dealing with, personally i prefer to buy things in CHCH just so i can meet the people,
Granted if your a mod or something here then you probably have major karma associated with you and you are most trust worthy but anyway what was my point again
oh yeah drugs are bad mmmk
but seriously if you come here and register to buy stuff and dont pay attention to the people here then its your own stupid fault if something goes wrong we arent here to hold hands and change diapers,
we will come up with something im sure and I gaurantee half you wont like it and the other half will thinks its great
ug back to work

ladies and gentlemen of this deposed forum, you must now decide whether to reverse the decision on my client postcount. i know it seems guilty, but ladies and gentlemen -

this is chewbacca. now think about that for one minute. that does not make sense. why am I talking about chewbacca when the postcounts's future is on the line? why? i'll tell you why. i don't know. it doesn't make sense. if chewbacca does not make sense you must acquit. here, look at the monkey -

you have no idea what I've been through to defend the rights of opinion that you members enjoy. But enough of that, *mumbles about everyone being ingrates* my point was this and as follows:

51-100 -> Ok, you ain't a newbie.
101-300 -> Overclocker.
301-500 - > Addiction Imminent.
501-1000 -> Must get life...
1001-2000 -> The force is strong in that one.

okay this suggestion is pretty ghey.........
but i was thinking of the buy sell exchange topics.....where you want to be able to tell quickly who 'has been around longer/is known
0-10 -> I havent done much here
0-50 -> I can be worthwhile
51-100 -> I post here Often
101-300 -> Ive made a Dent in OCNZ
301-500 - > Everyone here Knows me
501-1000 -> Ill post you later
1001-2000 -> Im posting right now
2001-5000 -> Forum Whore (Breathing down you Neck)
5001+ -> Beyond Whorage / custom.
i guess the impotrant thing you need to be able to tell is which 'status' is better........it gets a bit pointless after about 500 posts tho?....
still you dont want to mistake a 10-50 user with a 1000+ user just because the 1000+ 'status' is vague.

I think that it is perfectly acceptable that the member status is based on the post count.
But for gods sake hide the frigging post count, so that no one knows how many posts people have (unless they count them :D). Not just in the profile, but physically removed from anyone but a moderators view.
Also put an easily accessible list of the order of the member status level, but don't let us know what post count level you need to get to, to get the next level.
Keep the joined date accessible.
I still think a top 10 board is good, but with out the post counts.

i too like mashed's idea, with the exception of the first three... (too gameplanet-ish :rolleyes: :D). anyway how about:
0-10 -> First time caller
11-50 -> Member <--[cant think of one here]
51-100 -> Just above stock
101-300 -> Overclocker
301-500 - > Addiction Imminent
501-1000 -> Must get life...
1001-2000 -> The force is strong in this one
2001-5000 -> Forum Whore
5001+ -> Beyond Whorage / custom.
