I'm ditching Paradise because it has become so slow and was wondering if anyone has used Quicksilver....would value your opinions on alternative ISPs (fast one ha)

Thanks Pearl

I use

 Everyone favourite telephone company's ISP

They don't seem to charge me for running several modems on the same account simultaneously, (but others have been charged, so be aware).

If you are on flat rate you don't get charged, but if you are on an hourly plan, then having two modems connected is obviously going to go through the hours twice as fast.

Slow, how?

Are you talking Dial-up? Or in general? Because ADSL sure isnt slow, sir/ma'am.

Depends what ISP you are with SS
If you are with xtra and their dsl plan, well, heeheehee.
For dialup i would say ihug, had no probs with them.
If DSL go inspire....

I suspect slowness with Paradise is at YOUR end of the conncetion - I have never had any problems at threee different locations around wellington, neitehr has ma, pa etc etc.

Might wanna sort out any issues you have before changing ISPs

I totally agree Tojja, Paradise is mint.... I got 6kb/s download all the time, no busy signals, hardly even a frequent v.90 screwup (resulting in 33k connection)

Can't say much about their helplines, I sit there on hold for about 10-20mins on average.

You are right - their helplines such MUCHO ass, but aside from that they are faultless - they REALL did earn the best ISP title for a reason.

Dunno how they will go once fully absorbed into the runaway juggernaut that is TelstraClearSaturnParadise, but fingers crossed. I personally am heading away from them purely to go to ADSL, but somewhat reluctantly

yep, darn good, however when I go jetstart in a few months I will most probably goto another isp as I don't really like their current deal (no free national usage - I want free dammit)

I'm talking about dial up ISP paradise. It never used to be slow but about 2 months ago I couldn't get on line kept getting error messages and when I did I got continually bounced. But the worst thing of all was how slow it got opening up websites it would take a minute and a half on a good night or else it just wouldn't load. To download 1.3mb would take over an hour. My phones lines were checked, I have 2 new computers less than 6months old both different brands and it is happening on both of them. It started happening about the time zfree closed down and now testra clear has taken over paradise. Apparently if telstra saturn is your telephone provider you won't have any probs with paradise but if you are on telecom tough. We don't have a choice here in Taranaki we only have one telephone provider. That is why I'm switching ISPs.

Might wanna sort out any issues you have before changing ISPs Well I have been with paradise for nearly a year and had no probs until 2months ago...everyone I know on Paradise in Taranaki is experiencing the same probs as I am...the bad thing is that I talked these people in to connecting with paradise. On the weekend I in another forum I asked whether other people on Paradise were having probs I got over 30 replies all over the country and they were all experiencing the same thing. Are the people you mentioned with with telstra saturn?

None, except for my Mum as of 1 month ago. I think you overestimate telco's abilities to "pick" on people, though I could be wrong.

If i were you, and you are positive it is Paradise, go to another provider for a month, or better still, ask a mate if you can use their dial-up details for a week or so - see fi you notice a dramatic improvement.

Might wanna sort out any issues you have before changing ISPs Just thought I would mention I'm trying out quicksilver for a month and have had no probs at all it is 10x faster than paradise at night..but I have been told since that it is quite slow too..that is why I'm asking people their opinions etc. I've put up with this for 2months repeatedly phoning paradise, and it's a different story each time. Believe me I have had EVERYTHING checked out this end..it is PARADISE. The thing is why should I have to put up with it when there are so many other ISPs out there to choose from.....would you put up with it?

No sir, I would not. Do what needs to be done - give em the big finger - its seems you have the issue isolated

Oh and learn how to quote - 'tis painful to read your posts dude

Perhaps learning to paragraph might help as well....

Thanks for your help. At present I'm trying Quicksilver just for a month and have noticed the increased speed in everything....and tomorrow I'm going to log on to my friends computer with quicksilver because she is also totally frustrated with paradise too. But we want to find a decent one...sounds like Inspire may be ok.

Thanks

PS I should really look @ the top of my every post and look @ the broken VB code huh.
I am not sure if it is necessary to quote Tojja in every post ;)

okay, everyone STFU up and get on with the topic.

1) paradise run game servers, by my understanding they run far too many for the bandwidth available to them. who suffers? the normal joe schmo users thats who.

2) my dad is a telecommunications/data engineer (PC name for "phone guy") and the two ISP's that have the worst track record in the central districts are - drum roll please

* XTRA *applause*
* PARADISE *screams of joy from the audience*

It can also be noted that the only big player ISP that the company he works for only ever had one call out to is none other than Ihug. It can be further noted that on that occasion, the Ihug helpdesk was correct in their troubleshooting outcome, the phone line was indeed faulty, unlike the case with most ISP helpdesks that immediately turf you off to telecom and claim its the foneline at fault.

3) vast performance increases can be had by doing the following:

* smashing that POS winmodem and getting a hardware modem
* connecting via proxy
* having a local webcache, on dial up these forums load in half a second flat

bah.. the smell of turps has disrupted my train of thought so i'll stop here with the customary

I used Ihug for dialup - and would fully reccomend them, though they were better earlier than when I left :(. Their customer service was slightly annoying - but get's there eventually.

( BTW, when I say annoying, I mean I can't ask them questions like "what's packet loss to my IP like?" )

I now use InSPire DSL. And the customer service is the best I have EVER encountered. You CAN ask hairy questions, and the person on the other end isn't a $10/hour has to sit there for 8 hours moron ;).

I've never joined other ISPs - I research before I join anyone, so you can probably guess why I have never been an Xtra user.....

Well my father signed up to xtra way back when they first started, at first(back in the 14k4 days) it was ok, consistantly got 1.5k transfer speeds from most servers, things started to go bad when we went on the flat rate and they introduced the 087 network. After that we had lot's of dead time, slow transfer rates and lot's of disconnecting.

Also we have had major problems with the phoneline which the computers use, every summer for the last couple of years, the line would just die, (only happend on really hot days in summer) Telecom would send out an engineer who would test the line for a day or so, not find anything obviously wrong, then call in another engineer, they would fiddle about some more and eventually we would get service back. Also it has alot of problems connecting over 28k8 infact the fastest speed we have ever had was 36k, we have had our lines checked multiple times, and so far all we have had was an engineer remark "hmmm that's interesting"

I have also tried to convince my father to try another ISP, but he keeps saying that since we have phones from telecom, we should also get internet from xtra, better to get it all from the one company etc, also I think he doesn't want to change his email address. He doesn't want to get jetstart as our phoneline is crap and therefore not likely to get anything near what we should so there would be no point.

oh well that ends my rant for now

varkk, go to the JetStart site and SEE if your line can handle JetStart before you presume otherwise (unless you have done so already)

I have already checked, and our exchange has been enabled for jetstream, but we keep having these problems with out line, which telecom doesn't know how to properly solve

hehe dsl is a digital service.. in theory it should be a bit more fault tolerant than your modem:

"the cliff effect - its either on, or off"

as for moaning about what speeds you get, just remember this fun fact of the day:

Telecom only guarantees a 9.6k connection on analog, this is to bring all their lines into compliancy with the common low speed modem found within the confines of a fax machine.
