View Full Version : PC2100 - CAS2 vs. CAS2.5

I was wondering about an OC I had little while ago (I did some benches on it, see below for links) As you can see by the pics my ram fell quite low when under CAS2 when compared to CAS2.5. But my oc'ing goes much better when under CAS2. I was wondering if I should be looking at better cpu performance or ram peformance.
I don't particularly like my ram dropping behind the rest under the benches so I prefer CAS2.5 What you people think?
Bench 1 (XP 1900+ @ CAS2.5 - 2.7v

That's not normal!
if the system is slower on CAS 2-2-2 than it is on CAS 3-3-3 there is a major problem somewhere in the system.
are you sure the RAM is times synchronous? 4:4:1, not 4:3:1?
Hmmm... that's strange..... low latency is usually better..... what mobo have you got? coz if it's the DRV5 the divider would have changed after 166 fsb..... also did you test under the same conditions?

Ok something just went to buggery, I hit the posy reply button and I did th stuff and it started a new thread. ?? WTF!!??
Anyway, I got a DRV2. I was at 169FSB (good number that :D
isn't it somthing like this:
cas2-143MHz-7ns
cas2.5-133MHz
cas3-125MHz-8ns
that's what I think my options are like in BIOS,
KJ, you explained this clearly on the old forum, except it's all gone now.

Hmm, installed newest 4in1's?

Well I dunno how I'm gonna get my ram benches up, any pointers ppl?
Huh? I thought CAS was column address strobe latency..... so lower was better but it just depended on your ram being able to handle it at higher speeds..... I have been wrong in the past
4-way interleave will help your RAM benchies and there should be a normal, fast, faster, fastest setting in your BIOS..... have a guess at which one you should try :p

I have all the latest drivers, mabye just my ram being stupid (it's not the best but still it shouldn't do that right? Mabye the bench was wrong? ) :( I had 4-way interleaving on as well I think. Don't think it was possible to go higher than "Normal" setting. But tomorrow I'll have a good day of OC'ing :D See if I can work it out

I will post a RAM FAQ later tonight..... stay tuned....

It will depend on the motherboard if CAS2/2.5 will make a difference in terms of memory throughput - with my XP333 the difference it makes would be inside the margin of error anyway.....

sandra is quite crap like that, you can't compare different clock speed very well with it, as for some reason its dependent of cpu speed.
do a bench mark run @ 1900+ cas 2 and compare that ,

the FAQ grew - so it's becoming an article... maybe this weekend? Stay tuned though, it'll definately answer all the above questions... ;)

Well I have had a little fiddle around with my oc'ing and produced this bench @ 1900+ CAS2 (4 way on) I can't seem to go over 154fsb to get 2100+ (169fsb) like I did before.

had some more fiddling around and upped my core voltage as high as it can go (1.85v) and I can kind of go a bit higher in the fsb but my temps are a bit high so I'm gonna knock back my vcore to 1.775 and lower my fsb to 150 or something. 38'C on medium seting on my Tt V7+ just isn't my cup of tea. :(

Looks like someone needs an Alpha ;)

hmm, damn look at those prices. I think I'll just stick with my V7+. Just out of curiosity what temps you reckon I'd get with one of those babies? Could sell my V7+ and save a little bit and blam I'd have one, only bought it off OCNZ few months ago.

Too many factors to give numbers dude.
Lower than what you are getting for sure.
I ran my 1.33 tbird @1.6ghz @ 1.85volts, putting out 92 watts of heat, and it was sitting under 40C @ load......
and i was using a very quiet 36cfm sunon fan....
Do keep in mind discrepancies between thermal probes and sensors on mobos.
You really cannot compare between systems, although, rest assured that an alpha will cool your cpu incredibly well.
Most certainly better than the V7+

Thanks for that, I'll look into it. I'll sell my two hsf's (Titan Majesty Twin CPU Cooler and of course Tt V7+), that'll get me at least 3/4 there. :D Thanks again
Oh yeah I am also running my crap GF2MX200 in my system atm, and I know that that's holding my oc'ing a bit (stupid thing likes 1.6v better then 1.7v). I am awaiting my GF2 Ti so that should hopefully make the difference.

Oh, and i was using an Alpha PAL8045, just realised i never actually said the HSF i was using, hehehe
Check to see if yer mobo supports the 8045 here (http://www.micforg.co.jp/mb_inf_pal8045e.html)
I'm currently using a pal6035 and a delta, my soltek cant use the 8045, stupid cap in the way.....
I used to use a pep66, hehehehhe.
Alpha make wicked heatsinks :D

NOT COMPATIBLE: Soltek SL-75DRV2 :( waaaa just my luck. There is a way around this surely?

Short of desoldering the cap/s that are in the way.......

oh what a pain in the bum, I'll have to pass on that move. Can't afford to do anything of the sort right now (I don't own the pc yet hehe :D)

Wouldn't that be a good thing then because now you can get the mobo to fit the heatsink ;)

Well I'm not exactly sure on what needs to be done to make it fit. Anyone know where I can find out?

It normally involves a saw, some spare time, and a bit of good old kiwi ingenuity.
LOL - you can [H]a><s0r it :D :D

I'd say go H20.
And you can't use the old "I can't afford it" line. ;)
Just ask mird or h2g0, they'll be able to give you mucho advice on how to do it on the cheap. :D
