He must do. MS just don't seem to DO different minor revisions of their NT OS's.

NT4, 2k and ME - none have a 'B' or 'SE' edition. So no, I don't think an XP SE is on the cards either.

A service pack would be good if they managed to crunch all of the current critical updates into one download though :).

service pack 1 for WinXP has been in development a long time.. it's release is being held up by the anti-trust trials that Microsoft is currently facing... SP1 is supposedly going to include the required changes as mandated by the courts..

eg: more flexibility in the setting the default for internet browser, email client, media player... ability to hide (not remove unfortunately) the crappy MS appz.

SP1 is with Beta testers atm. Slated for release I think around August.

Yor England practise needing :p

But from what I think you're saying, it's a service pack, NOT a new version. It'll be released similarily to Windows 2000's service packs - so it'll be downloadable off MS's site. And no, you won't have to pay for it. Though you'll still have to pay for XP in the first place.... ;)

All versions of XP that go to retail after SP1 is released will have it incorporated, you'll be able to tell by a sticker or something on the box.

I'd expect (but dont count on it) there to be a way you could order the Service Pack on a CD also though it may not be available immediately after the download is made available.

I'll burn it onto CD and deliver it to you (and anyone else) for $10. Sounds like a worthwhile enterprise ;).
