I Have just discovered the joys of wireless lan at UC. For those that go there levels 2 and 3 of the central library and the physics library have public access points there. You just have to use you normal user code and password and set up webgate to be able to use the net on a laptop.

I haven't been able to get internet enabler to work yet over it, it may not be possible.

So no more overcrowded crappily outfitted computer labs for me :D

Apparently they are going to be setting up access points in the eng library and the law library in the next couple of months.

yup, I heard they were going to do that late last year, but the original plan was only in the main library. So go get DC++ and start leeching off binky already...

Ugh, Whats the address for the hub/Is it still running?

Scanning finished
721 sec, 0.094 sec/host

132.181.1.0 - 132.181.30.255

IPs scanned: 7680
Alive hosts: 911
With open ports: 0

Ports scanned: 420

I also did 132.181.30.0 - 132.181.40.255 and it picked up nothing :(

Thats a bit of a bump mate :-S

Chances are they have all since moved out of the halls, so have NFI.

Wow you port scanned the uni network, well done IT love it when people do that. Also the filesharing on campus has been shut down by IT so too bad.

What can they do, I had a virus....it wasnt me....altho most of those dont work to many times. Most admins are so slack and just dont check, I know this from expiernce.

Still...but bleh.

They find virus. They shut down your port and make you take PC in to the tech dept ;)

Heh.
When/How did they do that?

It was done at the start of term. Halls and campus are being divided into seperate networks with no link. I think they are also planning to do that with the wireless as well for security reasons.

Apparently Otago Uni is getting wireless too.

Ive set up my own wireless dc++ network in my hall, its works good as.

Wireless filesharing. Ugh, nasty. There are DC Hubs on the halls network, there are hubs on the Engineering network. You can't access the halls from the canty network and the eng hub is restricted to eng ip's only.
the halls ip range is in the 172.16 range so you're way off there Tobiaz :)

It does the job, can get speeds of 1.5mbps though

Not realy preventing file sharing, but preventing campus<->halls sharing.
Although a usb drive would be a useful go-between.

You wouldn't know if there are any hubs accessible from other IPs within the uni? I've access to ethernet but not in engineering. IIRC the HITLab was running one a while ago...

Yes the HITLab was running one. Unless you're in the know you're out of luck.
...
There is no hub.

Someone did setup an IRC channel to discuss this on campus...

Not too much of this stuff should be said in a public forum...
