View Full Version : P4 533 and mobo
I'm leaving AMD and going for a P4 2.3 533Mhz CPU.
Does anyone run one of these and how far can it be overclocked?
Also thinkin of what MB to get. Seen the Asus P4S533 which can take the DDR333 ram. I've never run with the SiS chipset but from what I've read it seems ok?
Comments?
Cheers subz
IMHO
others may differ
Asus P4B533E (Ultra) is the MB you're looking for - not the S
I've enjoyed a short first hand experance on the above enough in fact to
convince me the extra funds are worth it
just gota order it *feel the style*
:D
What ram are you running?

Have you thought about getting RAMBUS? From what I've heard the price has dropped considerably and it still gets the best out of a P4.

Does anyone know of anywhere that has any of those B533E's in stock ? prefer Wellington but anywhere will do. Only one online I've seen advertising it atm is pcpieces and they're not expecting a shipment for another couple of weeks.

I'll give them a try, many thanks.
Cool, ask for Shaun, he's a good guy..this place is very good I've dealt with them for years.
I was in there today and they have the board you're after.
I bought a Asus P4B553-V from them today.

Got my fingers crossed then, sent them an email earlier this afternoon. thanks again for the tip-off.
I notice Asus release another version of the 533 series
P4T533 supporting a maximum 2GB of RDRAM is supported with a peak bandwidth reaching up to 4.2GB/s.

:p
here's a teste of online retailers who list one of the versions

and even DSE are into them

Tried calling them a couple of times today and got the answering machine, sent them an email too but haven't heard anything yet. Might just take a trip out there tomorrow and see
Yeah use my name no problem, ask for "shaun" he's the good dude.
Hey, does anyone know where in NZ you can buy Samgsung PC2700 with CL2 Cache latency??
I can get hold of CL 2.5 from www.compulink.co.nz but would prefer the faster RAM.
cheers
Just had a look at the Paradigm site in Wellington.
Couple of things:
They are exspensive.
Info on some of their boards is incorrect.
"Asus P4B533-V
Socket 478, ATX, Intel 845G Chipset, 400Mhz FSB,
3 x 184pin DDR Slots, 1 AGP Slot, 6 PCI Slots, ATA "
This is actually a 533Mhz board....theres 4 or 5 others like this, so its best to do your homework first.
The 845G intel chipset is the only intel chipset at the moment that will run the 333mhz ram as it has a switch in the BIOS to change the timing of your ram from 3:4 to 4:5.
One funny thing...why is the forum in GMT time..that weird aye.

I am planning to get the P4 2.53GHZ and the Asus P4T533 (RIMM 3200 and 4200 support)
i think that getting DDR RAM with a P4 is kind of a waste, because everyone has DDR RAM already, and there is still some to gain from RDRAM...

i totally agree. a big grunty P4 with DDR is kinda like a ferrari with a 3 speed gearbox.

when i got to overclockers.com cpu database and see that the average overcloked speed of a pentium 4 1.6 is 2427 Mhz it really makes me wonder about going the way of intel.

I hope you've got a bottomless wallet - cos the 2.53GHz chips can be summed up in one word:
PRICEY
From what I can see, of the 533MHz fsb P4's, only the 2.26GHz is really worth it. Maybe the 2.4 - but definately NOT the 2.53! I mean, it's more than twice the price of the 2.26GHz chip!! For a measly extra 266MHz! And I doubt you'll get much more overclocking room out of it, simply because you're likely to have other components fail first.
Well, that's how I see it. My graph sees it the same way ( prices from Styles (http://www.stylespc.co.nz/) ):

Yes, consider how much money you have and how much you want to actually keep in the end.
Getting the fastest and gruntiest computer for overclocking isn't the best idea withotu expensive or a very good DIY cooling job.
People generally overclock because they can't afford the highest speeds, but these people are skilled enough and often sometimes smart enough to know that they don't need to spend extra money when they can get the same speed with overclocking.
Anyways, hope you got a lot of money because Pentium 4's are a very expensive option for a home computer [if your not doing it for work or anything]!

that al looks good cept for the cpu
i wouldny worry about spending the extra 600 - 700 plus going from 2.4 ghz p4 toa 2.53 ghz
its just not worth it
save some $$$ and get the 2.4 ghz
these prices r from pp.co.nz
ive brought from them a number of times and give them a 8/10 :D
Intel Pentium 4 2.4Ghz 533Mhz Northwood Socket 478 CPU + Fan Retail Boxed 3 Years $986
Intel Pentium 4 2.53Ghz 533Mhz Northwood Socket 478 CPU + Fan Retail Boxed 3 Years $1,588
theres probabley only about 5 - 10 fps difference in games between the 2.... :D

If you want some cheap P4 goodness, why not go and grab Styles "old" P4 and mobo. He had that puppy up to 3GHz. :p

I doubt you'll get much increase out of it even with a little bit of tweaking..
Those boards pretty much max out the CPU when it comes to data transfer.. that is assuming you are going for the 1066 ram rather than the 800.

Sorry 4 delay in replying ! ADSL modem stuffed up ! Mobo is very solid and have had no problems at all. Was a little tricky (for me) to initially install Windoze onto a raid drive... its all go now ! :)
