Just curious as to what sort of machines people are using as their server, and what that server does.
I've got a Celly 700@stock (boooo!!!)running XP with 208 Mb of RAM and 24Gb of HD space. Basically it's out Interweb ICS gateway, and sits there crunching SETI and running DC, sometimes Kazza, and ocassionally and FTP server.
Planning to get a 100Gb+ HDD to throw in there and use as a file server/backing up our other 2 machines etc.

my "server" is currently a p133 with 48mb, and 25gb of hdd.
it runs plain old win2k (i really wanted to use netware but it needs a PII i think), and acts as a print server for the (hulking old ugly) HP Laserjet, does DHCP, and looks after my music :)
it also has no case

i have a Duron 800 (at stock, whats the point of overclocking an already overpowered server :p) with 256mb of ram, a 3.2gb primary drive, and an 80gb secondary. :)
it runs win2k pro with an ftp server, UD, IIS, no-ip etc. plus it stores all my music and with the sb live soundcard will be used as the music computer at flat parties. :D
considering switching it to slackware.

got a P200 with 96mb ram, 10gig of hdds (2gb ide, 8gb scsi), and some ****ty gfx.
is currently sitting in the garage ontop of our switchpanel running win2000, ftp, no-ip, apache, and some other services I use occasionally.
I use vnc on it so I can use it, I need to get ssh running on it so I can vnc into it from school as they dont even allow port 21 let alone 5900.

It is also used for Rendering Maya3d work, divx or ogg encoding. General number crunching..
We have 2 servers in our flat.

Server #2: Cel433, 256Mb SDRam, 10Gb HDD, ISA nic. Running Mandrake 8.1, FTP server, DNS updater, and will maybe one day be our firewall.

holy she-ite!
now THAT's a server!
oh, and cadmax, for the server os, i'd certainly recommend redhat 8! a heck of a lot cheaper, and will do everything you need it to do (and a whole lot more...)

smoothwall: p166mmx @ 290, 64meg pc100, 2gig hdd. Its tasks are pretty self explanatory
Azrael: celery @ some random speed about 450ish I guess, 192meg pc100, about 6 gigs of hdd space all up. Running NT4 Server. Does domain controlling, DHCP and also acts as a common storage point for install files (drives are mapped at login using a simple login batch file). I control it via VNC.
DC Hub: k6-2 500, 128meg pc100, 8gig hdd running NT4 workstation. It sits all alone on our DMZ and provides you guys with a DC Hub, and it too is controlled via VNC.

Pfffttt at all these windows boxes. I can't beat some of the power boxes in here, but functionality probably...
Duron 800 with 500 gig of HD space, and 768 mb of RAM running Linux.
- Master DNS for digitalgenus.com
- Samba for internal network, file server.
- Firewall for network (cable)
- Primary mail server for 6 domains
- Secondary mail server for 37 domains
- Web server for 6 domains
- Development web server for business.
- DHCP server
- SNMP and MRTG generation for six boxes.
- Rendering box for divx encoding
- and it answers the phone (voicemail )
:D
It's one of the master boxes in my little circle of servers, does backups of other boxes around the world, and generally monitors everything and tells me when somethings down.

The good thing about unix type systems is that they go out of their way to sound impressive but end up obfusticating the issue :)
I'm running a PII of some kind with 384 mb ram and a 40gb drive. Its running ISA server, IIS, Exchange 2000 and SQL Server.. Use it to do pretty much all of the stuff in the above post and also to support mobile internet.
I've got the p166 sitting here to be "servered" however need to get OS (Win9x not likely!) most probably Linux (yes i have been reading the posts!) just that the learning curve on top of work and study is a bit much, anyone in CHCH want to set it up for free???

Actually VNC hasn't been updated for ages, and there are much better versions of it. the original creators of it have updated it a bit, and it runs much better.
Go to here http://www.realvnc.com/ to download.
Much better implementation, and updated.
