They've been around a long time - I remember reading revues over a year ago, but they've only JUST arrived down under.
What are Zalmans?
Big-ass Copper heat-sinks. However, they're constructed like a fan - a BIG fan. And I mean of the Fantail, not the Delta variety ;). To give you an idea:
http://www.zalman.co.kr/images/october/6000cua.gif
How do they perform/cost?
OK. They're not Alpha's, but they're a d@mn sight better than stock! They are rather expensive though, with their flag-ship heat-sink retailing around $90-$100 here.
So why would I bother?
One reason: 20dB
That's about as close to SILENT as you'll get on air-cooling. Let's just say your hard-drive's are probably louder - the quite ones, that is.... :D
So I was just wondering what the lot of you think about these coolers now they're available here in NZ?

Well I think they are slightly overpriced, and don't forget that the 20db is with 'quiet mode'. It's 36db with 'normal mode' on.
Are you thinking about getting one KJ?

Not for my rig. And yeah, that's silent mode. BUT SO WHAT? Even Enermax PSU's are louder than that!! That is d@mn quiet - or am I missing something?

OMFG! I just found on of the crappiest HSF reviews of all time. Check this sh*t out: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/zalmancnps3100/
The only CPU's this d*ckhead used to test the CNPS3100 were a Duron 700 and a P3 800.

Give the guy a break - it was written in 1st Quarter 01, which would mean those speeds would've been the standard.

No, it wasn't written in the 1st quarter of 2001 - that was the release date for the cooler.
The review was written in August 2001. 1.4GHz TBirds were out at this stage. The reviewer is a tard.

point taken :D
I really don't see any problem with the review though. He's using what he can to test the performance, and makes a decent go at it.
It's not like he calls it a power cooler or anything.

I still think he should have used the hottest little CPU around. ie: 1.4GHz T/Bird...... Well that's what I would have used, but that's just me being all thorough and stuff.... :D
Because from reading that review how would anyone tell how the Zalman would perform on their T/Bird or even Palomino?

Remind me to flame your ass [H]ard if you EVER do a heat-sink review without using THE fastest and hottest chip available on the market, period. :p
C'mon man - not everyone can afford super-fast chips. But everyone CAN afford notepad and WS-FTPLE. My point being, anyone can make a review - even if they can't afford a 1337-ass rig.

I know the importer of Zalman in NZ, i am pretty sure hey will give me one for review... he offered me one last week for $75 at mates rates... But he also said there some that had got damaged in transit.. the packaging/insctructon had got damaged.. so will try and score that off him when get back to chch next week.
Any in chch fancy reviewing it?

Hmm that's a bit disgusting, but I have to be pedantic here and ask KJ if he meant my ARSE - because I don't have a donkey. :p
Also KJ, I don't give a toss what rig people can afford - I suggested the 1.4GHz T/Bird because it runs hotter than anything else. That's a fact - and if he did use a 1.4 T/Bird it would have been easier to judge the cooling abilities of the CNPS3100. ie: It's pretty difficult to judge the cooling abilities of a HSF when the reviewer uses relatively cool running CPU's - don't you think? Especially when the T/Birds were becoming very popular.

No wait - I won't actually get it, because I am so very stupid.
Don't think we will be doing a review on Zalman coolers, as Spider is selling them. Wana keep the possible fuss to a min.
