View Full Version : Simple XP WorkGroup 'Refuses' to share User folder???

Hi all,

I’m putting a very small network/Work group together for a friend of mine. For the world of me I can’t get ‘access’ to any of the user accounts across the network. I can these 'user accounts' under Doc & Settings but am denied access. (Look don't touch!)

Each workstation can access the internet fine. Each workstation can also ‘see’ and access each others C:\ drives just fine including the sharing of printers. (everything seems fine right? Wrong) (Heres the problem): None of the workstations can ‘access’ any of the ‘User folders’ under documents and settings????? The User folders (Which ONLY have “Power User” permisions) can be seen just fine but no access is allowed. (Despite them being setup to fully share over the network!) I get an “access denied you might not have permission” message or something like that popup when any attempt is made to access these user folders.”

On each workstation I logged on as the administrator and 'FULLY' shared the C:\ drive, and the 'User Folder' (Tina) It should be working???

My first thought was to try and create all three user accounts on each workstation including accounts named for each computer. This did not work.

Then I tried logging on as the administrator on all three workstations to see if the administrator would have enough power to access these user folders. Nope!

I give up!!!! Little Help please.

Here’s the setup:
Three workstations named (one, two , three). One and Two are running XP-Pro Sp-1, and workstation ‘Three’ is running Win2000 pro sp3. I have joined each to the workgroup ‘Rivera’, using that wizard under: System Properties>computer name>Network ID button.

On each workstation I have created a User Account with “Power User” privilages only. (These are named: Tina, Gina, and Maria) these will be the accounts that the employees will work off of on a daily basis. (The owner of the business will work out of the administrator account.)

I’m using a Linksys router as the hub and to inport broad band from a cable modem (surfboard). All workstations are pluged into the router and the Cable modem is plugged into the Wan input.

The route is just using default settings with DHCP enabled.

I would greatly appreciate any help.

have you tried running the Network Setup Wizard in XP?

..it's located in Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > File > Network Setup Wizard..

Thats usually helps me when i have network issues at lans..

Thanks for the quick reply,

No I haven't tried that option. It seems like my network is working cause I can share printers, BroadBand, and any files under the C:\ Directories but NOT the useres Folder?????

There's probably something 'simple' that I'm missing!

I'm going back at it tomorrow and will give your method a try.

Was was told in the past NOT to use that wizard but I'll try anything at this point.

I think you will find that either you have enabled "Keep my documents private"

either that or the folders have become encrypted

My two cents

I'm guessing you've enabled the guest accounts on each PC?

Thanks for the replies,

I've already tried giving everyone administrator rights and that did not work. I even tried logging into all of the workstations on the administrator accounts. That still did not work.

I DO believe that the gest accounts are enabled??? Could that be a problem?

It shouldn't be a problem, actually I hoped enabling them would solve the problem.

Thanks,

I give it a try tomorrow!

How exactly do you want me to remove the passwords?

Do you mean reset the passwords as 'Blank' and then rest them again with something, being careful not to enable 'MAKE USER FOLDERS PRIVATE'.

Sorry for the dumb question but I just want to get it right.

yep thats it exactly ... put in old pass and just leave the new pass blank and it will remove the password :)... then add a new password :D click next and it will ask if you want to make them private, choose no and you are finished.
If it doesnt fix your prob post back here :D

Thanks a million Agent666!!!!

Your solution worked with one addition. I had to Unshare everything in each workstation, Then reshare what was needed, then change the password to 'blank', then rename the password.

Finally they work!

Thanks for all your help. I still cant figure out why this 'procedure' was necessary??? I sure did not have this problem on my home workgroup.

Thanks again,

Doug

Okay,

Here's how it should have been set up in the first place:

I disable "Simple file sharing" under tools>folderOptions>View.
Many are of the opinion that this new option which is by default enabled, is full of bugs. (I agree)

By disabling "simple file sharing" I now get the same sharing options I get on my workstations at my office which are on a domain. Must easier to share.

Then, share the folder with "full" control, and then use the 'security tab' to lock down access'.

(I want to thank 'Relder' of TweakNetwork.net for coming up with the correct answer.)

Heres the thread if anyones interested.
