I seem to be having a ****e time with my pc at the moment. I'll have one or two applications running like nav and an explorer window open and everything slows right down. My mate has told me its a memory leak problem and I know its software cos Im running mandrake 9 and that runs fine.
Someone in here told me about a patch that would fix it. Another guy said that he had a registry fix that may fix it. Ive had to do a reinstall of xp since that time and its slowed down again.
any info would be greatly appreciated.
cheers

Well it definately can't be Windows XP. I run WinXP Professional with no patches and I don't experience that. Possibly you have set some extra settings... it will be pretty hard to diagnose your problem due to the "commoness" of it.
Tell us how you setup your pc, software installs etc etc

I have seen this happen when the proper IDE drivers are not installed. the times I have seen it, if you run something like DiskSpeed32 and check the HDD speed its around 3Mbps (instead of 40-60Mbps). It isnt fast enough for the pagefile access, and the ram just dissapears like there is no tomorrow. this may be the problem you are experiencing, or similar.

Are you using mother board monitor? There is/was a bug in that. Every time it did an update it would steal a small segment of memory. If MBM ran for a couple of weeks as it could on my system then all of a sudden there would be no memory left. There is a relatively new fix for this problem.

ss, installed xp after my pc crashed and lost all the data. I had to do a complete reinstall of everything. started off with xp and worked my way along...
graphics drivers
sound drivers
ali magic chipset drivers and ide drivers
nav 2003
xp updates
started again basically.
you can imagine if I was to go through all the software I had to reinstall we'd be here for hours.
*mr-ran diskspeed.....it averaged at 35 meg,so all good there.thanks for the advice though.at least i have diskspeed now (its a good app)
*bb- I have all sorts of little apps like mbm installed. no mbm though. there were a number of little apps on the motherboard installation cd but they seem to run fine. I only get things really slowing down when I have left explorer windows open for a while.
I think it could be my ****ty mobo aye
cheers for the advice.:D

"Avi files (divx) can be trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it's possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll.
To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following
registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D9
4-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32
This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files.

Probably Gator.
Try running Spybot - Search & Destroy or Adaware 6.

Could you do me a favour and open explorer, go into tools.options.general.settings and tell me how much disk space you have allocated.
This would be about 64mb in your case, by default exploder will try for 512mb. Since this is a cache, it will also try and load it all into ram.
You might want to try deleting your cache. tools.options.general.delete files and see what happens.

I was referring more to the ad/spyware component of Gator that installs on your machine during normal web browsing in IE. There are a few websites that have sneaky adware linked from their pages. Gator is the most likely to cause a system slowdown.
Always worth making sure you have the latest OS updates as well.

this needs repeating, Spybot - Search & Destroy is free and it will find many many common nasties that install without you knowing.
