View Full Version : OCNZ National Easter L3

fatsanchez
20-02-2003, 10:50 PM
The Event:

The legendary power failure and network outage free L3 + all your favourite ocnz celebrities (who would miss the chance to see SS, Shag, KingJackal, Whetu, SilverPriest, [H]arls and more in the same building :p )

Date/Time
18-21 April 2003

Venue
TBA

The Problem: (for north island members at least)

Unless you enjoy bending over and getting shafted by either a pilot or ferry captain, it's hideously expensive to travel on the ferries or entrust your precious rig to airport baggage "handlers".

Example Costs

1 Adult and 1 Car Return on Ferry : ~$440 Return + Petrol

1 Adult Fly via Air NZ : ~$330 Return (not sure about baggage limits etc)

3 Adults + 1 Car on ferry + Petrol = ~$270ea Return

This is obviously not including things like accomodation (via car a night in wellington is probable, but there are plenty of ocnz members and/or park benches avalible).

The Point of this post : I want to go, but $440 is a wee bit steep, and i'm not terribly keen on packing my gear up and flying, so driving is preferable (i think this is how whetu + friends are going as well), but i need 2 north island members to tag along to make it all viable.

SilverPriest

Whetu, [H]arls and myself are looking at coming down via car.
The cost however, is large, but hey.
If people could post here if they have something RELEVANT to the topic at hand, if they are looking to head to chch, can offer accomodation etc that would be fantastic :)

Also dates for the easter L3 would be nice.

I'm not sure of the exact time, except to say that it will be either 3 or 4 days.

The four days that make up the holidays are April 18th-21st
Straight from the...jackals mouth... :D
i'm sure we can rustle up some monitors for you guys too, even if someone has to use my 14" :p

bob_dole_nz

I'd be interested in coming down, although 270 dollars, sheeshe, good thing i am a student :D

I think my uncle would be able to put me and maybe another dude up, but then again maybe not. I would ave to ask.

Hmm, if i came down with my dvd-r i could probably cover my expenses. By chucking stuff on dvd at the lan. Interesting.

I am organising a Dunedin trip up, but I am currently just looking at the Uni Otago holidays to see if they match the Easter times. If they don't the Uni lads may not be able to make it, including myself. But if it was an extrememly boring weekend, well.. I might turn up myself.

Good luck for those going from North Island, hope to see you there.

Should be able to sort out some 17" monitors...and an ATX case. ;)

All of the universities easter holidays should match, as that is when the Easter tourney is held eachyear (the sports tournament between all of the NZ universities)

Also I have a spare ATX case here which could be borrowed for the weekend, it only has a 250W generic PSU though.

Also if I am setup in a flat by then (hopefully will be *touches wood*) I should have some floor/couch space available for some form of an alcoholic beverage.

Up from Dunedin i shall crawl, can drag a spare 17" if absolutely required for one of you northerners if you come down... bit dark but powerstrip fixes that up :)

Like Joshsti i'll be packing light and just bringing a hd with me :p. Not sure how I'll get there yet. I'm definately taking my hollidays over that time so I'll have weeks to do as I please. Yay!

Maybe I'll fly or just hitch a lift with one of u duners folk. I'm not keen on taking a bus all that way with only one stop on the way there. I wasn't given the nick "bladder boy" for nothin :D

Mmm I'll just check up on the flight prices from dunners to christchurch...

Geez, thats not bad at all! Just $65ish each way and the flight only takes like 45mins from takeof to landing instead of the 6 hrs or so on a bus that costs about the same

Eagle32
23-02-2003, 07:12 PM

23-02-2003, 09:04 PM
Ok, so sorta serious for a minute...

- I'll have to book my tickets early to make 'em cheap. So I need to decide how long I'll be staying in christchurch. How long are the rest of u fella's from out of town planing on staying there?

- And I'll also need to find a cosy place in christchurch to stay... SS? :p I could also just bring the multi coloured tent of doom and sleep in a back yard if need be.

- I'm not gonna have a puter. Just going along to meat u fella's. So I might even only spend one night at the lan leaching onto my HD and spend the rest doing other stuff like sitting on the side of the road drooling at all the little asian ladies u have there:D . Thats unless any of u wanna do something different. Like go find a nice garden bar or pub someware to drink and talk geeky / gay stuff, play pool etc...

*update*

Ok, SS doesen't want me. Anyone else want a bed mate over the holliday period?

Binky Stunt Cat
23-02-2003, 09:37 PM
i'm gonna be staying all hols...and i'm waiting for Robbo to send me that removable hdd caddy, so once i badger some more guys into grabbing one of those, leeching aint gonna be a problem :p

varkk
24-02-2003, 12:01 AM
So how long would people want to stay in chch, I'm thinking some sort of BBQ type activity would be a requirement. Also it would be good to go into town as a group (those of us over 18 that is) and shoot some pool/drink/ogle the slappers in town... anyone else keen for anything like that?

p.s if anyone wants I can provide a P3 with not HDD for leeching purposes (stick yor drive in and away we go)

fatsanchez
24-02-2003, 12:03 AM

Mashed_Penguin
24-02-2003, 08:10 AM
Yeah a BBQ sounds like a sweet idea? Any volunteers for where we could have it? My place 'might' be a possibility, I'll know more when I'm back in NZ. The only thing is my place is about 15mins drive from town. That is presuming the lan is at C-Lan.

Oh and surely someone could lend shag a pc.

24-02-2003, 12:36 PM
Aww dusty! U not gonna be there:( I'll call in and say hi before I head up to christchurch anyway.

And I don't really need a pc to play games on. Just happy to wander around gropping bottoms with a beer in my hand. Vark, that bare bones p3 sounds like a good idea. Thanks bro! There might might be a couple of others who wanna do the same and just slap their hd in there too...

Like binky, I'm not really in for that stripper stuff or hard core pubing. But I've got nothing against finding a quietish bar someware to have drinkies or just spend a day rolling around someones lawn in front of a barby

fatsanchez
24-02-2003, 02:40 PM
i feel the same as shag on the drinking thing (as long as it isnt wasting precious leeching time during the lan  )

is it just me, or does there seem to be more monitors + accomodation on offer than there is north islanders to take advatage of it.

Also should have a few spare bits that could go into a dedicating leeching machine (Cpu,Mobo,Ram,PSU)

currently the plan is to put my mobo, drives and vid card in a cardboard mobo box, arrive, open box, insert vid card, and start leeching :D

I have enough spare parts to make a spare machine for those who only plan to bring their hard drive down. The machine spec is:

Athlon 1.3 Ghz TBird
512 MB DDR266
GeForce 3 64 MB

However you may be stuck with a small monitor due to people already hiring the 19" we have, although I hope the other 19" comes in handy.

If the money comes avaliable to me I may also buy a removable HDD caddy for you guys coming down from the North Island (And other South Island visitors). It won't be terribly good, but I think it will just fulfill it's purpose.

http://www.shentech.com/lianl0remhar1.html, avaliable at DragonPC. Hopefully he has one in stock.

More news on this system when it arrives.

Those CD's are just bang for cr@p stuff. They are pretty shocking quality, and I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. I've had someone's CD's work once in my DVD-rom and then fail to work when I put it back in after 10-15 mins use.

Anyways, I've comtemplated with myself and I thought why both getting a HDD caddy anyways? I doesn't take THAT long to shove someone's hard drive in anyways. I would only need to screw in one screw and heck that would be it (well plug in molex & 40 pin cable too).

sharing a ride with you would be good, but we still dont have any 100% confirmation of dates/times from Mr KJ, and i wont be booking until then.

Whichever days it does fall on, i'll be flying in on the morning of day one, and flying out ASAP at the end of the last day.

take the bus $4 and the bus turminal is only 5 mins walk from C-lan (if #14 is there)

so far this looks like the best plan (qantas is way cheaper than airnz atm)

Arrive Chch : 1145 on the 18th
Leave Chch : 1230 on the 21st

for the low low price of $290.

it would be nice to arrive a few hours earlier and leave a few hours later, but it'd cost me an extra $70 or so.($360 via airnz)

are you flight times close to those shag? (it would be more convenient for the as yet unnamed person who gets to pick us up *hint* :D )

Damn it, looks like I've left my bookings a bit late. All the cheap flights have gone over that time. So as of now, if I book my flights i'll be there on the 16th and leaving on the 23rd. There's also a big saving by booking online. So if I can just get someone here to lend me their credit card I'll be able to do it for $130 instead of the $180ish the local travel agent wants.

Yes, yes it would. But why spend 6 -7 hrs driving when u can sit in a plane for 45 minutes :D

I don't have a car capable of that sort of trip so the only other option was to scrounge a lift of eagle. But that much time in a landy would drive me nuts. Sooner or later I'd be trying to touch eagle and then things would just get messy:p

ok well i just posted the other post and then read the whole thread

firstly can someone answer my questions..

1) if its a 3-4 day lan, do we sleep THERE ? or have to go home (or to accomidation) each night

2) if sleeping there do you provide beds, or bed matting or whatever ?

3) if were going home each night... can we leave our computers there, (dont trust you ocnzer's) or would we take it home each night, and what kinda times would we be going home and coming back??

4) Shag depending on age you might be able to sleep @ my dads house... that goes for anyone (ish) lol

5) how much money will we need for food (if i eat tons ;))

6) i need a monitor... :S if someone could hook me up witha 17" or 15" ?? maybe i could give you $5 -$10 that would be cool

thanks guys in advance for answering...

1) if its a 3-4 day lan, do we sleep THERE ? or have to go home (or to accomidation) each night
-Yes, we usualy do that anyway...more details will be avalible when the location is secured.

2) if sleeping there do you provide beds, or bed matting or whatever ?
-see #1

3) if were going home each night... can we leave our computers there, (dont trust you ocnzer's) or would we take it home each night, and what kinda times would we be going home and coming back??
-You can leave em if you want, just dont expect your spot to still be there when you return. And whenever you want.

4) Shag depending on age you might be able to sleep @ my dads house... that goes for anyone (ish) lol
-bad bad bad choice :p

5) how much money will we need for food (if i eat tons ;))
-as much as you will need (duh)

6) i need a monitor... :S if someone could hook me up witha 17" or 15" ?? maybe i could give you $5 -$10 that would be cool
-you might be hard pushed as there are a large number of people comming, my second monitor is already taken, i think the two L3 loaners are taken, so you need to do some quick talking :p

Extended answers to everything:

hey i was looking ... ... ... could contact meI may be going up by bus. I have asked Eagle32 for a ride, but he has gone to L3 #13, so I haven't got an answer yet. Anyhows, it looks like the bus option will occur soon since I need to book them very early. I have bus'ed my computer many a times from Christchurch and Dunedin, no damage since I had packed it up in a good box with styrofoam.

1) if its a 3-4 day lan... ... accomidation) each nightYou physically sleep there. I have done it a lot of times, but the times when I had really needed sleep or a shower I would go back home.

2) if sleeping there ... ... matting or whatever? No, L3 does not have the funds to do this. Imagine buying 70-80 beds, mattresses or camping mats, then imagine where you would store them and to bring them there. Everything is B.Y.O essentially.

3) if were going ... ..., (dont trust you ocnzer's) ... ... and coming back??I leave my computer there because I know most people at L3 would not touch my computer and also look out for it. For that I let people use it as long as they don't damage it. If you don't trust us ocnzer's then why are you coming to an OCNZ run lan? KingJackal and I are both OCNZ members...

5) how much money ... ... i eat tons )This depends how much you want of what. If you want expensive stuff like gormet meals, well bring a lot of cash. Either way, just bring excess in cash. If you don't spend it all then take it home, when you need money, I don't believe ANY of us will offer to lend you money unless you can pay us back ASAP. As for me, I only ever loan money to people I completely trust.

6) i need a monitor ... ... would be coolThe one L3 monitor is gone (The other is still in warranty repairs I still believe). I can hire you a 15" for $5 however.

thats good then ... ... the city somewhere. With how much fun ya having at L3 I doubt you will even wanna leave! :D

Lastly my own news:

I have this machine for hire :>
Athlon 1.3 Ghz, GeForce 3 & 512Mb DDR266. The hardware IS stable, as I have got it running stabily before. The pre-requisite you will need is a HDD with an OS. Due to that, the hire charge is about $15. Fire charge is negotiable ... ...

I have this machine for public file sharing :>
Celeron 600 Mhz, 192 Mb SD100 & 15GB. The computer is stable and lan ready. I will probably but a HDD caddy into this one since the case is so small and it is a big hassle to open it up all the time (HP computer). Since we may potentially have a LOT of people wanting to use this all at the same time I will have to impose a small charge. Also you *MUST* bring your own HDD to place the files onto as this is actually a server for game patches and so forther. The charge is 50 cents an hour. This may seem ridiculous, but this prevents people from hogging the machine for like 20 hours or so. Due to this computer being so small, it can only fit 1 HDD at a time. You can reduce the charge of course if you split it up between 10 people for example by just downloading what everybody wants. Sorry, I need to place this, not to make money of you guys, but to just manage the computer. However if let's say 5 of you PM me and say that you all agree to share the computer evenly and that is all of the people who want to use the computer, then the charge is lifted. PM me if you don't get it. This *ONLY* affects people who want to come down and file share.

we can understand your concerns for your boxes...earlier L3"s at rolly etc.."Thc" would get me to watch his rig while he buzzed off home...now he doesnt even ask ..just buzzes off for a day and leaves the rig right there..no probs..kj goes right through..and so does streetwise dudes like "moi"..

"accidents" like the equinox..forgeddaboutdit..."dOg" is watching

and..

this is christchurch...
where we like to think that sort of thing just cannot happen

edit: btw: its expected you'll have the common sense to report to the organisers to advise them of your leaving the building ..who you are.if we dont know you already..even if we do and the events a biggy then its a good idea.....where your rigs at..etc..etc..so that the possibilty of any "accidents" are cut right down....

I main point of an L3 is to have a great time and get to know the people around you, on that note let me introduce myself.

I am Sumo. I am the Large Member. If you are caught stealing from an L3, I will ensure you also meet a nice inmate by the name of "Bubba" when you spend 3 months inside. (Thank God for friends in low places)

Or if you are caught stealing it will be a game of "Let Shag and SSquirrel at 'em". (I have only read about it, but the counselling is helping!)

Basically if you want to keep your system safe, introduce yourself to the people around you. Name your gear, and if it can walk put it in a bag.

To be perfectly honest, there wasnt a moment at #13 that someone could have wandered away with stuff, mainly because at any point in time, at least one person per table didnt have his/her head down in a game...

And on the sunday, when some of the goons went off to maccers for some breakfast, there were the few of us left and we were quite aware of anything happening.

I'd say your **** is safe, but what do I know, I'm a security person (who is also pretty vigilant/vigilante)

Yes, that means if I saw you touching someone elses ****, I'd **** you six ways from sunday.

North Islanders; Silver' etc, if there’s anything I can maybe help you with other then accommodation (as I live in a box) I'll try and help in wot ever way I can, just email me and I'll see what I can do, will have monitors etc that I maybe able to sort for you and others, little bits and pieces. Happy to do this as long as things are looked after and I don't have to worry. Maybe best if one of you accept responsibility for what ever is taken and deal with me personally, I don't have the time these days to deal with everyone that may require something in terms of this help.

But am happy to see if I can in the PC equipment area?

Talk about it and let me know via my StylesPC email addy. Cheers Robbo

well L3 has plenty of servers this lan..i just put together my p41.6a nthwd on the epox 4sda+ with the 512 kingmax pc2700 with a 40gb drive,,and an enermax 350watt psu all chucked back in the old ali case..lmao..even bought it a couple of blue led fans and a cold cathode..

so ive got one ..artifice..Thc..sern...hell well have heaps of game servers..this time round..

so: the master plan..take the dvd out of main rig into server..add a drive caddy to the main rig..looks like its a 200 gb drive needed there..

put two drive caddys into the server and two more drives..

sata is an option as well but the gygabyte [ has the sata cables etc] could go in the server later on..and add sata as well if its cheap and working out..i like the idea of the caddys as i can just swap out diff drives as i need them with ease
